Black Invictus vs a Drakkar Cruiser v2

Hey everyone,
I went through a bunch of iterations on the alien ship with the artist. This is the previous 'final' variant, but I wasn't happy with the purple ribbing.

I always pictured the Drakkar ships as Reavers from Serenity.

yes--blockier with no care for aesthetics, which is its own aesthetic. Something like the Jawas' Droid collectors on Tatooine. Functional, spacious and ugly.

Looks like a mollusk or something with that long, segmented shell. I wouldn't have imagined the Drakkar designing and making something as refined looking as this (and yes, this is a refined looking ship, if a bit unsightly), given their propensity for violence and destruction rather than design. With the Drakkar being raiders, I'd have imagined them to take the designs of ships they've taken from the other races and slap them together haphazardly to obtain the most vicious appearance possible.

Yeah, it sucks having artistic vision\ideas with no graphic artistic acumen. I got many a image in my head and no one who's style I even like enough to consider commission. Plus I got no money. XD

for a space battle, they sure are close but how else to frame them in a picture?

Having commissioned some 3d art myself I can agree wholeheartedly that dealing with artists is frustrating. Nothing against Hibbli either, he fixed it until it conformed with my instructions.. but by then all of it still didn’t look quite like what I had envisioned. I took it because he had fulfilled the bargain. Bottom line is the outcome of commissioned work often deviates from the paying parties’ hopes. It’s hard to avoid that. Overall it looks great and the Invictus’s distinctive silhouette is great too.

I like the purple ribbons better, just for the fact that it gives some detail and relief from all that black! Doesn’t have to be purple but purple does match with the plasma bolts so I’d keep it imho.

I prefer the main hull on this one too, which is why I asked him to scale back the ribbing and make it not looks so rubbery. He decided to redo both the top and bottom of the ship and get rid of a lot of the cool organic look to it which was a shame.
Honestly, dealing with artists is very frustrating. I give them a very specific brief with loads of sample pictures to show what I mean, then they decide to go off on weird tangents putting their "creative spin" on what I tell them to do.
I often feel like yelling: "STICK TO THE FUCKING BRIEF!" but I'm not sure that would be conducive to a good working relationship. ;-)

Personally I like this version better than the other, aside from including the canonically mentioned ribbing, it gives a more organic look to the ship, almost like articulated plates.

The Drakkar cruiser must be difficult to dock. It reminds me of a cactus.
