Where I grew up in Yorkshire, Evening ended at 9:00pm, then Night took over till 5:00am for Morning. Most night shifts started 8:00pm, Morning shifts at 6:00am (10 Hr working Days). Therefore late evening would after 9:00pm, but when is tomorrow?? LOL

I'm actually really enjoying writing this one. When I write anything, it plays out like a movie and I just write what I imagine, adding little bits here and there as I think of them. Often the final chapter takes some interesting turns from my original ideas, so it's a lot of fun for me to find out what happens!

Tefler, your wonderfully prolific and we love the good work your doing on our behalf but never forget to take the time for yourself so you do not burn out :) I know folks would rather wait 12 hrs while you retain your sanity rather than 12 months till you can face a story again!

Part 1 is 17.5k, but the chapter as a whole will probably be around 30k. I'll have to see how the final scenes play out. I plan to release the entire chapter late tomorrow night (UK time). I spent the morning editing part 1 and I'm delving into Part 2 as we speak. :-)

Quick Question, in the past you were usually turning over "Part 1" around 10-15K words, does that indicate that this is a longer chapter? Or are you going to get your average of 30K words and release draft 1 Friday-ish. When you are on track you seem to do between 5K-7K words a day. Not that I am paying any attention - Nah, not me!!!!! LOL

Also my thoughts Mario, heat is energy and if they are firing their weapons - if they could immediately convert any heat from their weapons, during any engagement what needs powered - shields, engines, and weapons. So the energy your using helps you to some degree in a fire fight and allows you to fire more often and longer with improved protective shield regeneration.

There's a physical limit to how much that will matter based on the specific heat capacity of the heat sink material and their mass. Better to have the heat sinks set up to transfer heat to the structure of the ship. See my post above in response to Grimlakin's post. Based on the massive power throughput that the weapons in Tefler's universe have, the amount of additional heat absorbed by the heatsinks would be inconsequential. Good thought, though. In our world, the type of system you're talking about is used by some drag racers for intake charge cooling due to the rate they produce heat (high), the time period over which they require cooling (relatively short), and the efficiency of heat transfer afforded by a chilled heat sink (conductive/convective heat transfer is directly proportional to the square of the temperature difference)

Umm, yes and no? In space the issue a lot of times isn't dissipating heat, but rather dissipating it evenly to avoid stress warping, As well as keeping heat in. Thermal radiation is rather good because of the vacuum of space allows it to dissipate quickly without being hung up and held by a surrounding medium, such as air or the true heat stabilizer in air, water. But, for massive heat dumps as you are pointing out. You could potentially set up liquid cooling that exposes the liquid to space in controlled waterfall style coolers as mentioned in the mass effect series lore. Their are many different theories I see bandied about across many different genres and actual science. But the theories I see on here using carbon make good sense because of the efficiency of the vacuum of space to "radiate" heat away from objects to cool it. Of course this is working under the pretense that you aren't getting to close to a large thermal energy producer like a star or exceptionally high energy gas giant. But even with liquid cooling that's a matter of insulation rather then active heat dissipation.

Here's the issue in space.. And someone that knows more Please correct me. But with no atmosphere there is no way to dump heat outside of thermal radiation. So it is the radiation.. Meaning in this case invisible and visible light spectrums being created that "dump" heat into space. To do it faster you would need a material that could act as a transfer for the heat. Be that air, or some. Liquid, that would then move and transfer the heat to something else. Same. Premises to a push pull configuration on a water cooler resovoir. Moving more air cools faster.. So a way to sheathe whatever needs cooled in something liquid based to transport the heat would be awesome. Of course a psychic cooling the barrels as fast as they could fire kind of breaks the need for that. Lol.

Peltier devices, also called thermoelectric coolers. Most of the time, these have to be supplied power to actively cool something, and work in conjunction with a heat sink of some kind, but it is the same item that creates power based on the temperature difference across certain semiconductor materials. They're not terribly efficient, but that's nothing that Dana couldn't fix.

On a computer CPU the heat sinks are cooled by air but there are versions that cool by liquid flowing circulating and dumping the heat somewhere else. There is a version that converts the heat into electricity.

There is a two prong attack against both John and the girls as well as the Invictus by Mikaboshi. I base this upon the last words we heard from Mikaboshi that he would be taking from John what John took from him. What John took from him was his favorite assassin and his battleship. So: I see Faye planning to leave with the Invictus, but waiting around until to watch her 'family' get their awards. Just as the bomb goes off at the awards ceremony, she gets a security warning from the motion sensors in the access hallway. Faye is so distracted by the explosion that she hesitates but eventually effectively deals with the intruders after contacting John and sending the Raptor to the rescue; realizing the flaw in her logic streams which neglected to take into account antagonistic forces would seek John and the girls out even without the Invictus. The bomb is under the podium at the awards ceremony. Just like at Karron, Alyssa hears the voice of the person who is going to set it off just a moment before it blows, giving her just enough time to shield the family. That shielding redirects the blast wave right at the Admirals and all but Admiral Harris and Admiral Devereux are instantly killed. Our brave Sgt who was transferred from Port Medea to Com Sec rallies the loyal troops in attendance to help support John and the girls as well as provide time for Rachel to completely heal Admiral Harris but Admiral Devereux sustained a massive brain injury leaving only her autonomic nervous system functional. Rachel heals her but she is effectively brain wiped due to the explosion. Meanwhile, a small group of assassins within T-Fed who work for Mikaboshi attempt to finish off John and the girls in nano-weave invisibility clothing. They have both underestimated John and the Girls and over estimated their stealth capability when Alyssa/Athena do the mind walk/body glow thing they did in the underworld station and identify the good/bad guys. The red glow eminating from the bodies of the assassins cloaked in the invisibility suits gives them away and Alyssa, John, Jade (in Tiger form), Calara, and Sakura engage in close combat to kill them in VERY short order...in front of cameras that are still rolling. Both Admiral Harris and Admiral Devereux are medi-vacked out in the Raptor with John and the Girls to the Invictus. After they are safe and things settle for a moment, Faye confesses with tons of guilt which John deals with very effectively...promising her pilot control over the Valkyrie, the Raptor, and the two Cruiser gunships to be stored in the large hanger so she can help protect the Invictus and project power/work the battle plan during space battles with the promise there will be no more crew/family-involved boarding actions after they destroy Mikaboshi. There is a media shit-storm over the bombing, and the reveal of the crew's abilities. The Invictus is denied permission to leave until everything is sorted out and John invites Jehenna onto the Invictus as a way to get the truth out to the Terran public. Athena transfers her consciousness over to Devereux, rewriting her memory engrams in the process. John 'feeds' her and gives her the 3rd helix and opens it completely, making her another female Progenitor. She takes over as Fleet Commander, being the only Senior Staff left alive other than Charles, and the two of them take over T-Fed command. Devereux's lapses in memory are explained away as PTSD and are quickly ignored due to her rank and the needs of the Federation for a strong leader...which she obviously becomes in the short term to help John in the upcoming battle with BSP. Athena/Devereux works closely with Admiral Harris, using his expertise, and allowing him to groom into the future Fleet Commander. Calara's father is quickly made an Admiral and our Sgt from port Medea is given a promotion to head of Com Sec. Our promoted Sgt then pulls in and promotes his Lt friend to whom he shows loyalty. John then visits the Brimorians (either before the revenge on Mikaboshi or immediately thereafter...depending on where his base is (New Eden in the same mountain range where John and the girls go skiing on vacation?), and gets their most advanced shield tech by ceding over the disputed worlds with T-Fed (which also normalizes relations with T-Fed and gains John some notoriety with the Brimorians). John then shares the lower grade shield tech with the Ashanath, Maliri, and Terrans...keeping the military level shield tech (with Dana's upgrades) for himself. In the last Genthalis based Invictus refit, John finally impregnates the four Noble House Matriarchs, along with Edraele as a surprise. All this fits with the narratives provided, including the pulling together of all the major races to face BSP. BSP has not been procrastinating and playing games as some expect. He has been systematically weakening all the races in the area while waiting for his minions to arrive from another part of the Galaxy (they do not have wormhole drives). However, BSP is now not the only Progenitor after John because he has broken the 'law' and given unapproved powers to his girls and must be destroyed as a result...sequel anyone? Lol. However, there is the surprise reveal of John's parents to help with this new threat.

I agree, with Alyssa's ability to multitask it would seem odd that she had not invested it. I am also sad to see the Sensae thread just seemed to end without resolution. I hope John invites him to come along on the voyage to attack Mikaboshi. He could die in his attempt, which would make some patrons happy I suppose, but even that has the potential for a touching scene and some closure for him and the story.

If the ship is at all well designed, it wouldn't have such SPOFs (Single Points Of Failure) present that would be so crippling, especially in a mechanical part that would, almost of necessity, be subject to failure at some point.

On another point about Irillith: We know she can manifest a physical presence through a digital network (shie first did this back on the underworld when she fried some folks) why can't she just manifest herself in the power core room of an enemy ship and just fry the power couplings so the ship is dead in space? Seems to me that would be a faster form of incapacitation than taking over the ship systems and then having to take the time to target, attack, and overwhelm another ship...she could do more damage to more ships in a shorter amount of time and since elevators would not work, moving pilots to their fighters, bombers, dropships if not already on deck would be impossible....including opening the bay doors since there would be no force fields to hold in the atmosphere.

Just to be clear, as I understand it, when Rachel 'looked' at each of the crew, her comment to Alyssa was that she was actually a Progenitor, whereas she didn't have that reaction to any of the others, including those with the 3rd helix being active. So, clearly, John did a banging job (pun intended) on Alyssa when he was spending all that time with her and her alone. Her vision of John, as well, was obscured, so she doesn't have the same clarity as to John as she does to the rest. So, we just don't know Alyssa's potential, much less John's. We do know, however, that all three of them - including Edraele - can telekinetically manipulate materials that do not have Etherite in them, such as people, and that the Etherite only facilitates easier manipulations for those who are much weaker than they are. We further know that John - and so far, only John of those three - can manipulate the DNA of others, which requires a *much* finer level of control if it's being done telekinetically than almost anything else that's been demonstrated so far, and that to date, he's only been able to do that with those with whom he has an active bond. Finally, we know that John had to fight some 'resistance' in order to give the ability to Rachel to be able to do what John has done, diagnosing (perceiving) and healing (manipulating bodies in a similar, albeit *perhaps* less nuanced fashion, as John has done) those with whom she does NOT have a bond. In some respects, it's possible that John has enabled Rachel to do that which John himself cannot... and if true, that would be the first time that such a thing has occurred with John, since everything else that he has enabled, he should be capable of doing.

That is an interesting idea Grim...kind of like what Athena did with the Raptor shield panels I am assuming? Problem is: Etherite Crystals are what make everything psycically shapeable...and that does not seem to be present in the Legacy panels as it leaves a telltale sign as reflective specs on the surface.

I don't think that the BSP is using a hull fabricated using technology. I think they use ships crafted of the mind hence why they are neigh indestructible even to other ships of battleship size ramming into them at full speed. That should elicit a terrible amount of energy transfer. Yet there is little no. Reaction from. The BSP at all.

That temperature is for vacuum. In air, carbon nanotubes, which are rolled up graphene are stable until roughly 750 degree Celsius. This means Chrystal Alysium would have to be something that doesn't react with carbon at high temperatures. Possible, since we don't know what CA is made of.

More Information on Graphene: Earlier I spoke of the structural strength of Graphene, here are some other interesting things. Carbon sublimes at a temperature of 5,530°C (9,980°F). Thus, carbon remains solid at higher temperatures than the highest melting point metals such as tungsten or rhenium. Under normal conditions, graphene has the highest thermal conductivity of all known materials. Materials of high thermal conductivity are widely used in heat sink applications. So not only will Graphene provide a frictionless cannon tube, it can also be used to pull heat through a cannon barrel and provide unprecedented heat dissipation if wound in as multi layers of spiral scrim with Crystal Alyssium as an epoxy substitute...same with the laser tubes. At that point, the whole barrel is actively drawing heat to the outside of the weapon so the regular heat sinks can dissipate it.

She's not a bad girl. She loves her crew, holding each of their lives in the highest regard. She's just too smart and not wise enough. She can and has predicted millions of possible outcomes leading to one or more of them getting hurt or even killed, and the more dangers that they're exposed to, the worse the possible outcomes. She wants to put them back in the nest and not allow them to fly until she can remove all the dangers out there. That might be an overly simplistic view of her perspective, but that's what I'm reading into Tefler's portrayal of her.
