The Doctor- Thank you very much for another great reaction! I really love this episode too. I have to admit, I was surprised to learn that Doctor Whale is Victor Frankenstein, and a little taken aback by it because the story of Frankenstein doesn't fit into the fairytale world. However, the more I thought about it, the more I really came to like it, because it does fit into the storybook world since Frankenstein is a classic novel, and it has been mentioned before that there are other far off lands beyond the Enchanted Forest. Plus... I also absolutely love the rivalry or debate established through Whale/Victor Frankenstein and Gold/Rumplestiltskin... magic versus science. Absolutely fantastic! In regards to Jefferson and others calling Doctor Frankenstein a wizard... Science is not a power the people who live within the Enchanted Forest and other lands with or without magic have ever heard of before. Science... like magic is for those like Emma from our world, is unknown in other realms. And so to see someone harnessing lightening and to meet someone who claims to be able to resurrect the dead through the lightning's power, it makes sense that those in the Enchanted Forest would believe him to be a wizard. And in regards to the mention of the magical slippers... Rumplestiltskin had hired Jefferson to collect the slippers known from The Wizard of Oz, which reveals that Oz is one of the mysterious worlds that the Mad Hatter can travel to. Rumple hoped to be able to use the magical slippers to travel to our world... A Land Without Magic, to find his son, but Jefferson states that they had been taken to a new world... foreshadowing that they were stolen by someone from Oz. There are magical items, nods, and references to all kinds of fairytales, classic novels, tall tales, etc... brought into Once Upon a Time, and I absolutely love how so many stories are brought into this show in some form or another. So with this mention of the magical slippers from The Wizard of Oz and with Jefferson calling Frankenstein a wizard, it would make perfect sense for us fans to think that this wizard would be the Wizard from The Wizard of Oz. I thought so when I first watched this episode, only because it made more sense to me at the time that they would bring in characters from The Wizard of Oz over the characters from the classic novel... Frankenstein. However, they are definitely not a combination of the same character. Now... we also get to see another new world again, known as the Land Without Color... because the world is black and white just like the old classic black and white monster movies, which I absolutely love the design of, as well as the organ music and many symbolisms to Frankenstein's story. And we have the lightning striking down as well. It's really brilliant! I always love seeing new worlds, realms, and kingdoms brought into this show. As for where his land is located... Rumplestiltskin tells Jefferson that he's been seeking a way to get to a land without magic... to our world so he can find his son, but there's no more magic beans or portals to our world because it's a land without magic. And Jefferson can only transport himself and others to magical worlds through his hat. This tells us that Frankenstein's world is separate from our own, just as it is separate from the Enchanted Forest as well. And while science is what Frankenstein studies and practices, magic does exist somewhat within his world as well. Just think through your classic black and white horror movie knowledge if you know anything about them, and you will realize there's such things like werewolves, witches, sorcery, etc... This is why Jefferson is able to travel to the Land Without Color through his hat, but cannot travel to our land, that is without magic. I hope this makes sense. Now... I really love the twist in Frankenstein's story and I love the backstory between Victor, Rumplestiltskin, Regina, and Jefferson, who is finally shown as the true Mad Hatter he used to be before his life was turned upside down by Regina, and I love this side of Jefferson. He's charming, funny, and Sebastian Stan plays the Mad Hatter in this episode brilliantly! He's amazing in this episode. I also love that we learn how Jefferson and Regina meet, and how the three men come to work together in order to manipulate Regina into making her become the Evil Queen. It's very sad, but brilliant. What a twist! As for my thoughts on why Regina becomes the Evil Queen within her backstory throughout this episode... I feel it's because Regina finally realizes and understands she no longer has reason to remain good for after she was manipulated into believing Frankenstein couldn't bring Daniel back to life. The love of her life was truly dead and because Jefferson has harped so much on the fact that if Dr. Frankenstein couldn't bring back the dead, then no one could... Regina has come to believe he is right. And truth be told... he is. For Regina... when the Doctor fails to revive Daniel as far as she knew, that was it. Daniel was truly dead and she no longer carried that hope that magic or science could bring him back to her. So, instead of remaining good like a part of her did for Daniel's sake, she gave into the hate and anger she felt for Snow White and her mother, and returned to Rumplestiltskin to finish her lessons no matter what path he took her down. She shows Rumple she was prepared to do whatever he asked of her, even if it meant killing innocents. Just like Rumplestiltskin wanted all along. Lana Parrilla's acting in this episode is phenomenal and her scenes with Jefferson, Whale, and of course Rumplestiltskin are amazing. I feel so badly for Regina both in her past storyline with trying to bring Daniel back from the dead with Victor's help, as well as her present storyline with Whale, who actually succeeded this time, even though Daniel is revived to become more like Frankenstein's monster, and not just himself as he was, like most people would expect of him to be. Because he's in so much pain. It is so sad she had to watch Daniel die again as she kills him for a second time. And Daniel is dead, thanks to Regina using her magic to lift the preservation spell keeping his body preserved all these years, and therefore his body is restored to as it would be had Regina not cast the spell. Nothing but dust. Very sad. I absolutely feel so sad for her. I also love seeing Regina go to Archie twice throughout this episode so he could help her talk through her pain. Regina's really trying to change for Henry, and I love this development in her character. And Archie is so kind to her in spite of her former reign of terror, which I also really love. I love how he is able to put her past behind him enough to try to help her. Now... I really love the scenes between Henry and David too. It is very sweet for David to give his grandson a horse to take care of before he learns to ride it. Very smart of David to tell Henry that he must learn to care for it and to allow the horse to get to know him before Henry learns to ride it. And Henry is really cute with his horse too. I love how David teaches to care for his horse before he can learn to ride him. It's so important. And lastly... I absolutely love the first meeting between Hook, Emma, and Mary Margaret, along with Mulan and Aurora there too. These scenes with Hook are my favorite throughout the episode. I just love, love, love how sassy Hook is, and it's phenomenal when Emma sees right through Hook's lies, and his story is convincing even though we know exactly who he is. However, Hook finally confesses as he explains he was asked by Cora to join with Emma and Mary Margaret to find out everything he could about what they would be facing upon arriving in Storybrooke, then heroes and villain make a deal that allows for Hook to remain alive and at their side. I absolutely love the scene while Hook is tied to the tree. It's my favorite moment from this episode, especially Hook's line as he introduces himself as Captain Hook... absolutely fabulous. :) "Killian Jones. But you all may know me more by my more colorful moniker... Hook.", to which Emma retorts, "As in, Captain Hook?" Perfect! And yes... Hook is absolutely gorgeous. :) Also... I love Hook working with them now and how quickly he's prepared to change sides. That he's willing to turn his allegiance over to whoever can give him what he wants. Yep... he blabs everything because he doesn't care. He's very sly and clever. I also love his answer he gives to Emma to convince her why he wants to go with them to Storybrooke. Because it's the simple truth. He wants revenge against Rumplestiltskin for cutting off his hand, and more. Oh yeah... and in regards to why Jefferson has to come with anyone who jumps into the hat with him... It's because Jefferson serves as a guide for the hat. If you remember back to season one's episode, Hat Trick... the first time you see Jefferson inside the hat along with Regina, we see a multitude of doors surroundings them. These doors all lead to other lands with magic in which they could travel, including Wonderland like in Hat Trick, and now to Frankenstein's black and white world... a Land Without Color. Jefferson would have been needed so he could show Dr. Frankenstein which door to take. If he were to enter the world with the Doctor, then the rules of the hat would apply. The rules which state that if two people enter the world, then two must return. If one enters, then one must come back. But Jefferson only would have traveled as far as inside the hat upon returning Victor home in the end, simply to show Frankenstein which door to take to get home. At least... this is what I believe. Just my theory. I hope all this makes sense. All the scenes with Hook in them are my favorite scenes throughout this episode, but I also really enjoy Whale's overall backstory with Rumple and Jefferson too. And there's so much more to come!!! 2021-05-12 09:16:44 +0000 UTCJust a quick side note, James Whale directed the original Boris Karloff Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein movies, hence Dr. Whale's surname name. The first name of Victor obviously came from the novel itself and the main character. Mary Shelley (the writer of Frankenstein the novel) was married to Percy Bysshe Shelley, one of the English Romantic Poets, who basically hung out with Byron, so you can imagine what kind of guy he was. Dr. Whale may have been named for the director, but got his personality and womanizing traits from Percy Bysshe's reputation (those Romantics were a ROUGH bunch!). This was the hardest character for me to figure out, but the black and white opening is what sealed it for me because I had my suspicions, I just didn't know if they were gonna go there. I am an old horror movie buff, so I knew who James Whale was, but this name was the biggest stretch they had done so far. Once I put the pieces together, it was brilliant! Oh, and Shelley's monster really wasn't a "person" per se, he was made up of many parts...the doctor did "technically" create the monster, but honestly, the doctor's behavior is what makes him the monster. The monster himself becomes more and more human as the novel progresses and the doctor becomes more monstrous.

But when the Doctor tries to recreate his experimentations permutations, in order to gain Regina's favor, Daniel isn't the docile man he was before Cora crushed his heart, with cold calculated alacrity. Regina is only more of a wreak then ever, & we can only witness what she's been thru, & the real Villains behind the making of the Eville Queen. OUAT will subvert, expectations, & as Jefferson says change ones perspective. I think he was sorry that he used Regina, in that way, but Regina didn't forget, or forgive him or Dr. Frankenstein. More she doesn't forgive her master manipulator, Rumpleπβπ»π©π»

Larry Curley & Rumple. & As the scene plays we learn she's not only being tricked & Blanched by Jefferson Rumple's right handy Madd man, with a sideways grin a Hatter's Mischief, now Jefferson shows us his true self. But Stans is so good & so much fun, we dismiss the fact that he is a shyster, & preforms his task for Rumple, in making Regina broken enough to prepare her to hate everything & everyone, to blacken her heart, so that he can get her to eventually enact the Eville Curse. π§π»π§πΌπ

This one was a tribute to the black n white Horror flicks. & Separate is the now Storybrooke, & Enchanted forest full of torn out hearts & dead bodies... So much fun. Hook was stuck under all those bodies, for how long?ΒΏ Cora told him to pretend to be a black Smithy till she could slaughter all those people, never made sense to me. & also makes Oncers wince, Hook is a Villain OUAT for revenge. It does make sense he seems the kind who would let this grusom scenerio Play OUAT. When jig is up, he's realized he has a new opportunity on his plate. When Emma Swan enters his purview.

I've read that when MGM made the movie, they wanted to show off their new Technicolor process and they changed the color to the ruby slippers because the vivid red color was more impressive on the screen. I'm no expert on copyright law but I have heard that the original book is so old that it is now in the public domain but MGM retains copyright of the phrase "ruby slippers" from the film so ABC could reference "slippers" in general along with other references to The Wizard of Oz but they could not say or show "ruby slippers" without being sued by MGM.

Un melted marshmallows, Take out of bag pour into bowl now leave aside for the moment, get tall sifter fill with red food coloring beware this is Completely messy. Now blue food coloring, lightly mix add Clear soda crushed ice, mix in sifter now take marshmallows take electric lighter & brown marshmallows on cooking sprayed baking sheet, social distance marshmallows. At least four inches apart take browned marshmallows set aside to cool. Take sifter & add two scoops of cotton candy ice cream, or any rainbow sherbet you can get. Now mix up in sifter, now find a clear glass slowly pour contents in, now top with toasted marshmallows & carefully pour in clear soda, again add colorful straw carefully add sprinkle of cherry cool aid for more effect then flavor

Hook joining Emma, & the other amazing women, aftWe feel Snow is irritated, by the Odd addition of the Cheeky Captain, but Emma & Hook seem to have a kindred understanding of one another & they hope to trust in him. Because Cora is far too mistrustful. The one thing that stopped me from thinking Wizard of Oz was they didnβt say ruby slippers, so I stuck with the whole Cinderella thing in regards to glass. I love searching for the clues!

2021-05-04 15:34:33 +0000 UTCBack Whenever Rumple interacts with Jefferson about the βslippersβ , no itβs not the glass slippers, Rumple said he needed it to βtravel to another landβ and that Jeffersonβs hat couldnβt because it only allows him to travel to realms of magic. This was referring to our world because Rumple at the time was trying to get back to find his son! Also Iβll leave ya to figure out what the slippers actually are. Might pop up in the next season π

To make it even more appropriate, this episode originally aired just a couple of days before Halloween. They also continued to make the Storybrooke name of the character important; the classic Frankenstein movie was directed by James Whale! They also engaged in a little misdirection in this episode by having Jefferson give the crystal ball to Rumple and then talk of slippers that could transport one to other lands, then they referred to Dr. Frankenstein several times as "a sort of wizard." While it makes sense that people in the Enchanted Forest would describe Frankenstein in that way, it also made some viewers speculate that Dr. Whale might be the Wizard of Oz. Of course, it turned out he wasn't but that little misdirection, along with the fact that "The Wizard of Oz" was partly filmed in black and white, helped to delay the realization of Dr. Whale's true identity. I was impressed that you were watching closely enough to notice the flag outside the window. Even though that particular view had no real significance, keep paying close attention to backgrounds like that. Someone once showed me a frame from a future episode in which there was a window in the background and something easily overlooked was visible through the window - it turned out to be foreshadowing of a future big development. I can't say what it was because it would be a major spoiler, but I'll just say keep paying attention to details like that! If I can find the image, I'll post it after you've reached the point where it would no longer be a spoiler. It's fun to look back and see how many clues they planted.

2021-05-04 03:05:46 +0000 UTCi completely forgot how much was in this episode!! i love how they introduced dr whales identity slowly while adding hints here and there. and i totally forgot that they donβt even confirm it until the last scene! i also love how much of a rollercoaster of emotions this episode was for regina. you see her genuinely trying to become a better person and working really hard for herself and henry. and then daniel comes in and she feels so defeated after having to let him go. i felt so bad for her because she now feels guilty for using magic even though in that situation it was the right thing to do. but in her mind if she uses magic at all, she failed. i just wanted to give her a big hug and tell her she did the right thing π loved this reaction so much and iβm really excited for the next one. definitely one iβve been waiting for!!β€οΈβ€οΈ
