Ad-free: Alex Rodriguez switching positions to join the Yankees was a big deal

When we were talking through ways to title this series, Clara threw out one option based on comments/tweets/etc over the years that was 100% a goof, but also would've been fun. The form was as follows:

Babe, wake up! Alex Rodriguez's a Yankee.

Would it have grown old? Maybe. By avoiding using that format, do I now really want us to make a show just called "Babe, Wake Up"? You know it.

But for now, the only new show you have to worry about is Big Deal. In this episode, Clara dives into what led to A-Rod joining the evil empire in New York, the other possibilities on the table, and why Rodriguez is maybe really bad with money.

By the way, we've still got tickets available to the Scorigami live screening in New York on September 3rd. We're currently in the process of getting limited-edition posters printed just for the event. Hope to see you there!

I accept you for who you are, Clara.

This reminds me that at the veeery end of Jeter's career, under the threat of losing his starting role due to offensive decline, he suddenly learned how to be an acceptable fielder at shortstop. This implies that he could have done so *at any point* in his career, instead of flushing wins down the toilet with his awful fielding. He just couldn't be asked, I guess...

The one thing that needs to be emphasized is that when A-Rod signed with the Rangers, he turned down offers from contending teams that were only slightly less than the Rangers offer, well within the bounds of what he'd be willing to give up three years later to leave the Rangers. Everyone knew (if a casual fan like me knew, everyone knew) even then the Rangers wouldn't be able to afford to improve the team at any other position if they signed him. As a Mariners fan, I was hoping he'd take the Rangers deal becuase I was pretty sure the Mariners' best offer would hamstring the Mariners.

This deal happened because the Boston deal blew up. Did Selig blow it up? I forget exactly why that was disallowed. This was sort of a Chris Paul situation nearly a decade earlier, wasn't it? Oh. The Players' union. Huh.
