BONUS: Master and Commander

Tom and Joe watch Master and Commander, otherwise known as why life in the navy sucks ass.

Comments

It has been definitively proven that just blasting Teddy Roosevelt doesn't work.

Major Dork Thorklestein, HonFRS

Tom, are you still gonna make Joe watch The Terror? I’d love to hear his reactions—if anything, that view of the Age of Sail Royal Navy is even grimier

Paloma Alcala

I remember being disappointed that Master and Commander was not as gay as the title made it sound. That reminds me; you don't cover pirates often, but I'm wondering if any of you have watched Black Sails, which is ostensibly a prequel to Treasure Island, but definitely aimed at adults. I enjoyed it, but I've always had a thing for pirates.

Markus D

I worked with the guy who owned the HMS Suprise, met a lot of odd people working at colonial Williamsburg. I think he sold it to the San Diego maritime museum after the movie

Presidential cage fight: My first thought was Teddy v Jackson, but then I realized Jackson would've done an Indy and pulled out a gun and just blast Teddy. So my actual vote would be Taft v Garfield. Tell me that wouldn't be worth the PPV $.

Mealworms, the larval stage of the darkling beetle, is a great source of nutrition, and easy to raise yourself. By weight, they have more protein than steak and more fiber than broccoli. A small farm can be kept in a very small space (about a cubic foot), and eats basic grain like oatmeal and the occasional sweet potato. One important element of raaing mealworms: the beetles don't fly, so you very rarely get runaways

AnIconic Dog

This is a continuation of the Gaelic in a Bosnian accent bit, and I love it.

Jonathan Grafton

Movie Maturin is great. But book Maturin is fantastic.

Patrick Kearney

Refillable vapes are easy, and super cheap once you have the mod and tank, just buy juice and the coils every so often. Can't get on with the disposables.

Rob

How many subscribers for one of you to fight in a Street Beefs match?

Ben

If I remember right, the movie kinda mashes together 2 of the books. I think "Master and Commander" and "HMS Surprise."

Eric A Gentzler

It does have similar vibes to, say, Das boot. But that's what life is like on most smaller warships. Modern ships are a lot bigger, but like anything cruiser or bigger has a lot of space for extra amenities. I'd imagine being on a modern frigate wouldn't be much different than a submarine except you get fresh air and sunlight.

Eric A Gentzler

As a side note, George H.W. Bush was a TBF Avenger Pilot during WW2, got shot down while on a bombing run, JFK was the skipper of a couple of PT boats (one of which was cut in half by a Japanese destroyer). While doing some googling about other presidents who served in the military, I found out that Richard Nixon was assigned to the Marine Air Group responsible for supplying Vella Lavella (VMF-214) and Bouganville, too bad a rip on Nixon as a REMF didnt make it into Black Sheep Squadron (or maybe it did).

Andrew Porter

You can tell Joe's really matured as a podcaster because he didn't giggle nearly so much as he might have when he said 'seamen'

Noblesse Oblahaj

yeah.... you can't live without a pancreas

James Van Dyke

The Soviet doctor took out his appendix, not his pancreas. Still impressive though.

Jonathan Bastow

My dad was in the navy and I was a toddler when this movie came out, so one of my earliest memories is sitting between him and my mom and watching this movie on dvd. It was the first instance I had of sort of understanding the experience my dad had living on aircraft carriers for months at a time. Still one of my favorites :)

Z Alexandra

i have to insist that all of the incorrect whale science in moby dick was 100% intentional, i think people don't realize that like 1/4 of moby dick is a comedy. the narrator even mentions that according to Linnaeus whales are not fish, and he's like "but Linnaeus wasn't a whaler so he's wrong fuck him whales are fish"

Karl Childers

VERMONT MENTION 😤😤 802 ES NUMERO UNO 🍁🍁

Lilith Dyke

To think that if he'd been eaten by the Japanese, JFK might still be alive today

Noblesse Oblahaj

That C# joke was pretty damn good

Akshay Anand

On those lines the Alatriste novels are also great. More than a century earlier but told from the Spanish perspective rather than the British or French.

Jacob Vardy

For more Sharpe, but with the French, I would recommend "The Duelists" about two cavalry officers who fucking hate each other and duel several times. Also has some of the best, most realistic sword fights in film.

Thoros of Myr

with Joe being a tanker i kinda wonder if the hilariously stupid design of the armored personnel carrier in Aliens would just make him too mad to speak

Karl Childers

I couldn't think of the rest of the tune. Nicely done

Adam P.

Any interest in doing an episode on Aliens (1986)? Lieutenant Gorman is a donkey, it's actually a decent movie, almost everybody dies. Taping a flamethrower to your rifle would probably not go great but we'll give it a pass.

ruin

Kinda disappointed nobody mentioned Andrew Jackson. Didn't he straight up kill a motherfucker in his early days?

Thad

"But there ain't no whales so we tell tales and sing a whaling tune!"

Shamus Hewitt

Our last president to see actual combat was old George H.W. Bush, who was a torpedo bomber pilot in WWII.

Tom

Hell yeah stalingurt

bossbear the rock

there's a slight chance you might get sick from eating weevils but generally they're safe to eat, just unpleasant. I'll never forget the time i sat down to eat a bowl of raisin bran in a dimly lit room and looking down after eating most of it and thinking to myself, "i didn't know they put flax seed in raisin bran" and then seeing the "flax seeds" start moving.

diy.and.die

We are so back

Dennis Schmidt

Hearing Joe mention Gaunt's Ghosts again makes me want a book club episode on the first three novels. I've always enjoyed them but a take from the perspective of a war historian would be fun!

UltraCoil

Also, Joe, Tank is the best tank-centric movie ever made.

Mark Hardgrove

First time I saw this movie was after coming home from surgery and watching it high on pain killers. It's a will not skip if it's on movie for me. It fucking rules. As far as The Terror goes, read the book before watching the TV show.

Mark Hardgrove

He's still a dweeb like the movie, it seems like a pity based relationship

Shaquille Virk

Maturin doesn't snitch on the assistant to Jack because he is anti snitching, and protects him from the Gunner who wants to kill him too. But he detests his assistant after that and gives him shit work and wittily insults him for the rest of the trip.

Shaquille Virk

The Hollom storyline in the Book is way darker - he knocks up the Gunners wife, one of only two women on the ship, and Maturin's assistant gives her a rudimentary abortion that she barely survives. Then the gunner waits until they are alone on one of the islands, and kills them both.

Shaquille Virk

100% with Tom here, a series on The Terror would fucking rule.

Ross Palethorpe

The basis for Aubrey is Admiral Lord Thomas Cochrane. One of his Midshipmen was Marryat who wrote a semi-autobiographical book which was one of the defining nautical novels of the period and was of interest both to Forrester (Hornblower) and O’Brian. As for the ‘end’ of the series, I would say The Commodore and 21. The former because that is when the series leaves mythic time and returns to the world. It offers as good an end to the series as can be found if it was intended. 21 because it was the last. (Mythic time because the books go on with little reference to external events. Book 4 = 1810, Book 19 = 1815)

Marc Bosse

I'm sad how long it took for the "Surprise!" jokes to start.

Ian (no, not that one)

Re: practical effects! They built a massive gimbal for a scale ship in a flood tank to simulate getting bounced around by crashing waves!

Sparky

Nixon would have been terrible in a fight, I’m sure he would have eye gouged and torn ears off or whatever.

Matt

Ooo. I was initially going to say TR vs Lincoln, but that's a good match up.

Chris Morse

In the book, the bad guy is an American frigate instead of French.

Andrew RVA

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!

Wazburd

One of my favorite quotes from Moby Dick: "Better to sleep with a sober cannibal than a drunk Christian."

Mags

Fuck yeah, actually love this movie

Seth Yates

being tired of Big Cricket is just the plot of starship troopers

Lain of the Wired

i hold that this is a submarine movie

Lain of the Wired

I read all 20 books as my quarantine read during COVID. The series ends after the Napoleonic wars end with Aubrey getting a promotion to flag Admiral and Aubrey, Maturin, and the Surprise sailing off so Jack can take over his new command and start a new adventure. Jack spends most of the series stressing about whether or not he's going to get a flag and pretty much all of them end with them sailing off for a new adventure. I felt like it wrapped up the series pretty well.

Patrick Kearney

Another presidential cage match I'd like to see is Andrew Jackson vs Teddy Roosevelt, just to see them trash talk each other before they just go full ham beating each other.

Page Chase

Will forever be highly disappointed that Tugger failed to make an appearance in this piece of, what could easily have been, cinematic history.

Pete

Hell yeah, salty pine shrapnel time

Brendan Hurley

Whoop whoop
