Someone had taken a little girl out of class, put wrapped her in car tires, dumped half a can of kerosine over her, and lit it. She had managed to crawl part way out, or someone else had tried to rescue her immediately before or just after she'd been lit on fire. When we arrived everything below her lower torso was melted to the concrete hardstanding. Somehow at that point she was still alive. I mean she was breathing. Afghanistan just seems to be unfathomably cruel to children. I'm not smart enough to begin to understand why.
