Laughed very hard at the joke about Candle in the Wind. Also funny, that song was written about Marilyn Monroe first, and the Elton John just repurposed it for Diana.

Bridget

Pre-Atomic testing steel is in high demand for sensitive lab equipment etc due to low inherent radioactivity, hence the rogue salvagers. Not a fan of desecrating war graves, but then again, imperialism eh?

LaboratoryXI

honestly china stealing from the british navy and disrespecting their dead is like 0.01% of the payback they deserve

Karl Childers

I’d believe it.

Matt

yes it is, WW2 wrecks in the region are vanishing wholesale

Rob

Just learned that either the Prince of Wales or the Repulse "disappeared" from its wrecksite. Supposedly a salvage vessel sailing from a port in China spent a few weeks dismantling the wreck for scrap despite it being a war grave. This is a 'thing' apparently.

I dig your style

Know what's cooler than ground-based torpedos? UNDERGROUND-based torpedos.

Masanobu Tsuji was such a massive piece of shit he became the archetypical "guy who was about to coup the government" in anime. Motherfucker made into GuP and Ghost in the Shell.

My default state is pun My brain just autocorrected "Kiwi Weeb" to "Kiweeb", as well lol

If you’re looking for Italian food-based content there’s a DND live play series called A Crown of Candy produced by Dropout. It’s Lord of the Rings but if it was set in candy land and it me of the nations, Cerisia, is a nation of bread and wheat people that speak in Italian accents and constantly has corrupt senators overthrow the government.

Kiweeb

Matt

This is why I don't trust cyclists.

So glad y’all are looking at this clusterfuck of a disaster. HMS Prince of Wales was a “fast battleship”, of the King George V class. Not a dreadnought, and she was relatively new (and had fought the German battleship Bismarck earlier in 1941). She was a treaty battleship built about the same time the US was building their first fast battleships, the North Carolina and South Dakota classes.

My grandfather was a sapper clearing the way into Buna. Passed late last year. Absolute legend of a man.

34 degrees celcius is not a normal body temperature. 37 degrees celcius is normal.

Can’t wait to hear the civilian government blame the military and the military blame the civilian government for not doing anything to prepare

You guys should do an episode on a interesting figure in military history but one that’s unknown. Kanji Ishiwara was a Japanese ultra nationalist that literally led the invasion of Manchuria but was also a liberal that believed in Japanese propaganda of “Pan-Asianism” and freaked out when he realized Japan was just doing what the West was doing in colonizing Manchuria and began to publicly speak out against the war. A total contradiction in that he was a hardcore ultra nationalist but one of the only ones that weren’t racist and didn’t view other Asian peoples as sub human and truly believed in Pan Asian unity to counter Western attempts at colonizing parts of East Asia.

The Germans and others in Europe also used bikes to transport infantrymen.

Glad they teach you history. Been seeing a lot of white people triggered by the CCP doing Japanese ww2 revisionism on Taiwan and claim how different society in Taiwan is from the mainland because of all the development that Japan did when it colonized Taiwan. While glossing over the massacres that they did in Taiwan when putting down uprisings all the while emphasizing the KMT White Terror.

bravosixniner

One life by the pillows fckin rocks , that is all.

I just borrowed a book from my dad called Hirohito and the making of Modern Japan and apparently it goes into all that. It's on my to-read list now.

Bike cavalry has arrived!!! 🚲🚲🚲 Jokes aside I have been waiting for this one.

Am Singaporean - the way history works (or worked when I was in school) is that a solid ⅓ of the curriculum covers the impact of WWII on the country in the 1940s. While I fully get why it’s not generally talked about (tiny country + the Japanese had so many victims), I’m really looking forward to listening to your take on this one! Thanks ☺️

Given the subject matter, I'm hoping Part II comes with some animal facts to ameliorate the atrocities we know will be coming :(

S.O. Khan

Japanese Imperial military history really is just a tale of being catastrophically underestimated by two of the three big regional powers and then to catastrophically underestimate the final 3rd.

jackson macpherson

Market Garden when?? great choice though. I love these WW2 episodes.
