The more I learn about British policing actions in the 70s, the more I understand their portrayal in Threads (1984). Because that film isn't depressing enough already.

2023-01-25 15:42:31 +0000 UTCThis episode officially holds the record for the most JFCs I’ve dropped in an episode. There’s nolack of terrible shit I’ve listened too in this podcast, but something about this one hit me differently.
2023-01-25 12:13:54 +0000 UTCOne of my friends grew up during the tail end of the troubles in Belfast. Grew up in a Protestant family, and had some sympathy towards the Catholics as many of them faced horrible discrimination when it comes to jobs and housing opportunities. However, he hated the IRA not because they were fighting for a free Ireland or that they were Catholic, but because his friends and neighbors were killed as bystanders in car bombings or shootings. The Unionists and Republicans participated in "tit for tat" killings, where both sides respond to murder with more murders to keep it even. This of course made life pretty miserable, as walking down the wrong street at the wrong time can get you killed. Talking to the wrong people can get you into major trouble. He eventually left for England, it became too much for him. He had plenty of stories growing up in Belfast. During holidays, he brought home his Jewish friend from uni, and they were going to meet up some of his old friends for drinks. The conversation went something like this: "Hey, your uni friend, is he Catholic or Protestant?" "... He's neither, he's Jewish" "Oh, ok. Is he a Catholic Jew or Protestant Jew?" "......... Protestant Jew."

2023-01-23 22:46:36 +0000 UTCI would just like to share a quote from Hansard (the official record of UK parliment proceedings) "Almost 50 years ago 14 unarmed civil rights marchers were murdered on the streets of Derry by the Parachute Regiment. Five of those victims were shot by David Cleary, otherwise known as soldier F." - Colum Eastwood, MP for Foyle (which contains Derry) Source: https://hansard.parliament.uk//Commons/2021-07-13/debates/CDF9AFDF-4BFA-4FA1-8481-B68CAF2DDB5F/ArmedForcesBill#contribution-768D1B2D-D4F5-405E-812A-8903DCEF768A
