EARLY EPISODE: The Troubles Part 1

Thomas O'Mahony, host of the Beneath the Skin Podcast, takes Joe on a walk through the causes of The Troubles in Northern Ireland.

(hint: the causes are the British)

I mean I do clearly have a lot of shit to work out. I just listened to the night witches episode. I know it’s a joke but he clearly thinks of it as “poison”. Just like his claim about coke being cut with “ammonia”, that’s just simply Ronnie Reagan level misinformation. This podcast is always on point about accuracy over hysterical sensationalism, examining underlying assumptions and breaking convenient shibboleths. That’s why I love it and listen to so many episodes. So yes it can be frustrating to hear basically the same stuff about drugs or “fent” I hear at work or on the news. Or Tom’s latest DARE style misinformation. Lol sorry that’s just how I feel

that was a 1 line joke insulting the dutch lol not a statement about 1980s drug policy or our history as people with addiction, which we both have. This podcast episode wasn't even about drugs! You just wrote more about it than we talked about it. I think you probably have some shit to work out that has nothing to do with an episode, again, that is about the troubles.

Completely agree. The anti hunting stance is extremely disappointing. As if supporting factory farming is somehow better. Uneducated response from someone I consider intelligent.

you hunted humans once , at least I use what I kill what was your excuse?

Yeah, Fent genuinely helped my mother with a serious chronic pain condition, because it was prescribed and handled properly, and now she's off it as she doesn't need it anymore. The insane messaging around drugs in general seems much more of a problem.

LaboratoryXI

You heard it first folks. Joe is now French...

Evan

I never reviewed the history leading up to The Troubles, so this was a good one.

When I worked at a call center I would pour the cold brew concentrate over ice and go through like a bottle a day.

It’s funny you say that, i find that the one part of the drug war that has been fairly successful is its propaganda wing, so much so that when people are exposed to criticism of it, you can hear their brains short circuit for a second. I didn’t think this would be controversial but it’s weird, lots of leftists have this Ronnie reagan side when it comes to drugs( other than alcohol) & their policy. I used to just not mention it, but I’ve lost too many friends to the horrifically toxic drug supply over the last 3 years.

are your two neurons on strike?

You mentioned it in passing (which is absolutely fair) but the Monmouth Rebellion and the subsequent "bloody assizes" is absolutely worth an eposode. A bunch of holdout West country puritans with pitchfolks and the idiot bastard of Charles II get owned in a ditch in the middle of the night by James II. The survivors get executed by Bloody Judge Jefferies, who is only able to ease the pain from his gaul stones by drinking gallons of wine and being perpetually full of stagnant piss. Peak English energy.

Ed Scott

Be careful rolling down your window to talk to police then!

The thing most commentary on the north of Ireland misses is how small it is (the population of a medium sized city in a space not much bigger than many large cities). In a place that small, nearly every person was either impacted by, or knew someone who was impacted by, the Troubles. It’s a hard thing to grasp, outside of that community, just how devastating that extent of involvement can be. Here’s one of my stories: My parents were Republican lapsed Protestants, and were involved in the Social Democratic and Labour Party’s civil rights campaign in the sixties. My father’s family, however, were monster raving lunatic unionists. One of his uncles by marriage currently sits in the House of Lords. This uncle was the subject of an IRA assassination attempt. The hit squad shot him using Thompson submachine guns. Unfortunately, the ammunition had been improperly stored (Irish bogs are terrible on ammunition), and misfired. He ended up with clothes full of bullet holes, a huge messiah complex, and absolutely no injuries.

Kevin Bodel

Oh shit. He went there.

New episode of Popular Front is out with you I see. Nice.
