2022-12-31 22:04:19 +0000 UTCIf there was a Hitler in the Cars universe he definitely would have been a VW. The American collaborator would be, what else, a Ford.

2022-12-26 20:04:51 +0000 UTCSo I bingewatched this entire series and I have to say Sharpe's love life pisses me off to no end and I don't know why

2022-12-20 23:18:35 +0000 UTCLoved this show as kid growing up in Yorkshire, Sean Bean is a local hero! 2 points though: the character’s description in the book is very different to how Sean bean looks and, with regards to dino train, pterodactyls aren’t actually dinosaurs right?

2022-12-17 09:37:16 +0000 UTCI posted this a quarter of the way in. 10 minutes of Train Hitler was an under-estimate.

2022-12-16 20:10:04 +0000 UTC10 minutes of this is about Train Hitler. I don't know what I expected, really.

2022-12-16 13:52:48 +0000 UTCAlso, I have to recommend the Horatio Hornblower series too. I think it's a bit better acted and written, but, it's the same 90s quality, but in the Napoleonic British Navy. It's also a good bit shorter. Thr Homie vibes definitely do grow as the show goes on. Otherwise I can't wait until you get to Sharpe's Battle.
Henry not Hank
2022-12-16 13:44:32 +0000 UTCI love Sean Bean but the man can't have it both ways. It's either Shawn Bawn, or Seen Been. You don't get to spell them the same and pronounce them differently.

2022-12-14 22:01:56 +0000 UTCI have two things I want to point out: 1. The train from dinosaur train is the only train in the show. 2. The train travels through time, to different periods of dinosaur time

2022-12-14 21:07:39 +0000 UTCHomie vibes definitely do improve. Also, half of the villains are aristocrat asshole British officers, so it's not all just French bad English good.

2022-12-14 13:54:26 +0000 UTCSo pleased that this is happening, my history teacher had us watch Sharpe a few times despite the fact we didn't study the Napoleonic Wars (British history curriculums are all over the place, I'm sure deliberately to keep us ignorant). I think we started because one episode is about the nascent Industrial Revolution that we were studying.
Luke Walker
2022-12-14 13:12:43 +0000 UTCSo in the early 90s making jokes about Irishmen making bombs would definitely have been brave, the provos were very much blowing shit up at the time.

2022-12-14 10:10:51 +0000 UTCThe one thing in which Sean Bean doesn't die! Loved the books and the show.

2022-12-14 02:57:58 +0000 UTCI saw all the movies years ago. I remember liking them overall. They are charmingly cheesy.

2022-12-14 02:02:05 +0000 UTCGive it time. I watch the original movies years ago and it gets a little more racist latter. But they also take the piss about racism and classism too. It’s a weird show.

2022-12-14 02:00:26 +0000 UTCPaul McGann (aka the short lived 8th Dr Who) was originally cast as Sharpe but did his knee playing soccer so Seannie B got the gig.

2022-12-14 00:43:42 +0000 UTCI never thought Thomas The Tank Engine and Dinosaur Train would appear in this podcast. My son’s two favorite shows... I laughed way too hard, and I couldn't get the damn theme song from Dinosaur Train out of my head during this whole episode.

2022-12-13 23:45:42 +0000 UTCSo while playing Vermintide 2, I discovered a Warhammer connection with Sharpe. The guy who voiced Saltzpyre the Witchhunter also played Sharpe's Major who gets offed and gives Sharpe his sword. They actually do the sword giving back and forth in Vermintide 2 between Saltzpyre and Krueger. Also, Dan Abnett who wrote the Gaunt's Ghosts series was took inspiration from the Sharpe series.

2022-12-13 23:44:15 +0000 UTCI'm so excited for this series!

2022-12-13 17:25:40 +0000 UTCI prefer Bolitho to Hornblower. A lot less baked in classicism and casual racism. Edit: the Bolitho series does take a turn for the derivative though. You can only write the same novel so many times I guess. Edit 2: I’m referring strictly to the novels.
Evan Andrews
2022-12-13 14:40:30 +0000 UTCAn interesting fact about the series is that Paul McGann was originally cast as Sharpe but during the early stages of filming in Crimea he broke his leg and had to be replaced by Sean Bean. (The homie vibes also increase significantly over the series.)
Jack Philipson
2022-12-13 14:35:58 +0000 UTCWhen Sean Bean says "still sharp" after cutting his finger on the shards of Narsil in Fellowship, he's improv referencing his role as Sharpe

2022-12-13 14:22:37 +0000 UTCWhen watching Thomas the tank engine with my kid, I remember a character that was a WW2 Era Japanese steam engine in the newer episodes. Imaging a tomas the tank engine set on the Burma death railway or moving troops in and out of Nanking.
Megan zietkiewicz
2022-12-13 12:43:25 +0000 UTCiirc, Major Hogan (Brian Cox's character) is also supposed to be Irish - though probably from the anglo-irish gentry rather than the working class like Harper. ps, there's a definite increase in homie vibes in Sharpe's Eagle. There's a reason it's generally considered one of (if not the best) in the series.

2022-12-13 12:42:49 +0000 UTCRe the Rothschild stuff, Nathan Rothschild was the main financer of the British Army in the Napoleonic war, even getting the news in London of Waterloo before the papers and Parliament. He was very skilled at getting bullion to the army in Europe. It's such a shame that anti-Semitism makes even mentioning the name and family sketchy, even when they were involved in doing something objectively good. I would also recommend Hornblower. I personally prefer it to Sharpe.

2022-12-13 09:57:53 +0000 UTCAbout the Hitler train discussion: Hitler might have just been a human in the Thomas the tank universe but there was also a german armored train called Adolf Hitler. So there would be both a human Hitler and a train Hitler. I wonder however what would have happened to the Schwerer Gustav in the Thomas the tank universe
