BONUS: The Sharpe Show 1: Sharpe's Rifles

The zoo crew returns to watch 90s British TV show, Sharpe.

Comments

Originally, it was Ringo Starr!

Major Dork Thorklestein, HonFRS

Really goddamn late to the party, but some quality Thomas the Tank engine class consciousness https://youtu.be/M4obsL-J5BM

drednorzt

Shining Time station was badass. George Carlin was the conductor!

Kate B

Can confirm that - at least in the original Thomas Books - World War II with regular Hitler does happen.

Komodo Dad

As a train driver I appreciate the rambling on about a train Hitler

Matt Odell

If there was a Hitler in the Cars universe he definitely would have been a VW. The American collaborator would be, what else, a Ford.

Matt

So I bingewatched this entire series and I have to say Sharpe's love life pisses me off to no end and I don't know why

APTerminator

He was railroaded into it.

ZombieDwarf

Epstein's island had to have one of those little trains you find in like a mall playground. You know, for all the kids there.

Matthew Barus

Or more

LD-50 Seattle

I'm ready for this to last a year

LD-50 Seattle

Loved this show as kid growing up in Yorkshire, Sean Bean is a local hero! 2 points though: the character’s description in the book is very different to how Sean bean looks and, with regards to dino train, pterodactyls aren’t actually dinosaurs right?

Tom Pantin

I posted this a quarter of the way in. 10 minutes of Train Hitler was an under-estimate.

Ed Scott

10 minutes of this is about Train Hitler. I don't know what I expected, really.

Ed Scott

To be faaair

Henry not Hank

Also, I have to recommend the Horatio Hornblower series too. I think it's a bit better acted and written, but, it's the same 90s quality, but in the Napoleonic British Navy. It's also a good bit shorter. Thr Homie vibes definitely do grow as the show goes on. Otherwise I can't wait until you get to Sharpe's Battle.

Henry not Hank

I love Sean Bean but the man can't have it both ways. It's either Shawn Bawn, or Seen Been. You don't get to spell them the same and pronounce them differently.

Henry not Hank

The Shitshooters

J Grant

Have you considered simply titling these "Homie Talk:Subject."

Breaker

I don't think the "I was only following orders" defense will help Tomas the Nazi Tank Engine come the end

Foshcat

Watching a TV show while riffing on it? That's podcasting.

IronNosy

i will wager $200 that the zoo crew never finishes the whole series

chrysanthemum

Isidore the blue

I have two things I want to point out: 1. The train from dinosaur train is the only train in the show. 2. The train travels through time, to different periods of dinosaur time

Etta H

Homie vibes definitely do improve. Also, half of the villains are aristocrat asshole British officers, so it's not all just French bad English good.

M0tty

In the tank engine multiverse the diesel engines sided with the fascists during the war

Raze851

Thomas the tank engine his cousin Gustav the rail road gun

Isidore the blue

To be fair, The Ghost Of You is one of MCR's best music videos, so it's impossible to say if almost dying was worth it

Marjorie Zeager

Ngl, laughed out loud at "Just have the Irish guy rig up the bomb."

Nick Mank

Little know brother of Thomas the tank engine is Gustav cannon the siege engine

Northsole

So pleased that this is happening, my history teacher had us watch Sharpe a few times despite the fact we didn't study the Napoleonic Wars (British history curriculums are all over the place, I'm sure deliberately to keep us ignorant). I think we started because one episode is about the nascent Industrial Revolution that we were studying.

Luke Walker

So in the early 90s making jokes about Irishmen making bombs would definitely have been brave, the provos were very much blowing shit up at the time.

Al

The one thing in which Sean Bean doesn't die! Loved the books and the show.

Greg Rehm

Now that’s soldiering!

Brandon O'Hara

I saw all the movies years ago. I remember liking them overall. They are charmingly cheesy.

oneyedjohn

Give it time. I watch the original movies years ago and it gets a little more racist latter. But they also take the piss about racism and classism too. It’s a weird show.

oneyedjohn

Paul McGann (aka the short lived 8th Dr Who) was originally cast as Sharpe but did his knee playing soccer so Seannie B got the gig.

Niall Holden

So is Nick alive?

Nathan Tenhave

I've been wanting a sharpecast since the idea was mentioned on KJB months ago!

Anya Sullivan

I never thought Thomas The Tank Engine and Dinosaur Train would appear in this podcast. My son’s two favorite shows... I laughed way too hard, and I couldn't get the damn theme song from Dinosaur Train out of my head during this whole episode.

I_like_planes_and_cities

Shapre's Eagle is also has a flag based plot.

Jack McReynolds

So while playing Vermintide 2, I discovered a Warhammer connection with Sharpe. The guy who voiced Saltzpyre the Witchhunter also played Sharpe's Major who gets offed and gives Sharpe his sword. They actually do the sword giving back and forth in Vermintide 2 between Saltzpyre and Krueger. Also, Dan Abnett who wrote the Gaunt's Ghosts series was took inspiration from the Sharpe series.

Jack McReynolds

I'm so excited for this series!

Erin Sietstra

Like, please Joe, let me live.

Alex

I hyperventilated at the "tell Howard Schultz to pour coffee down my boipussy" line, thanks bois.

Jacob Samuels-Kalow

I am shocked that the British would be so tone deaf to racism and antisemitic tropes.

Hammerthrust Von Sexron

Oh fuck yeah

The Squash

If we didn't have Sharpe, we wouldn't have a compilation of Sean Bean saying bastard https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tE8d-uGmIWk&t=1s

Shaun

I prefer Bolitho to Hornblower. A lot less baked in classicism and casual racism. Edit: the Bolitho series does take a turn for the derivative though. You can only write the same novel so many times I guess. Edit 2: I’m referring strictly to the novels.

Evan Andrews

An interesting fact about the series is that Paul McGann was originally cast as Sharpe but during the early stages of filming in Crimea he broke his leg and had to be replaced by Sean Bean. (The homie vibes also increase significantly over the series.)

Jack Philipson

When Sean Bean says "still sharp" after cutting his finger on the shards of Narsil in Fellowship, he's improv referencing his role as Sharpe

Alex Varrus

When watching Thomas the tank engine with my kid, I remember a character that was a WW2 Era Japanese steam engine in the newer episodes. Imaging a tomas the tank engine set on the Burma death railway or moving troops in and out of Nanking.

Megan zietkiewicz

iirc, Major Hogan (Brian Cox's character) is also supposed to be Irish - though probably from the anglo-irish gentry rather than the working class like Harper. ps, there's a definite increase in homie vibes in Sharpe's Eagle. There's a reason it's generally considered one of (if not the best) in the series.

Paul Wang

Re the Rothschild stuff, Nathan Rothschild was the main financer of the British Army in the Napoleonic war, even getting the news in London of Waterloo before the papers and Parliament. He was very skilled at getting bullion to the army in Europe. It's such a shame that anti-Semitism makes even mentioning the name and family sketchy, even when they were involved in doing something objectively good. I would also recommend Hornblower. I personally prefer it to Sharpe.

Jamie

I would absolutely love to know who was referred to in that bleeped section. My guess is the coffee man.

Space Crusader

Bernard Cornwell, I loved this series

Andy Simpson

Apparently this show is based on books written by the same guy who wrote the books The Last Kingdom is based on.

Whisky_Delta

to be fair

Jordan Curl

About the Hitler train discussion: Hitler might have just been a human in the Thomas the tank universe but there was also a german armored train called Adolf Hitler. So there would be both a human Hitler and a train Hitler. I wonder however what would have happened to the Schwerer Gustav in the Thomas the tank universe
