2022-07-08 18:39:07 +0000 UTCMy high school history teacher was a CAF veteran who’d deployed to Bosnia, so one would think he would have been super about the Aggressive Canadian Cope that casts the Dieppe raid as necessary, which is basically how our textbooks framed it. Instead, he told us all that Mountbatten had recklessly thrown in the lives of colonial soldiers into a terribly-planned operation because he felt that the lives of colonial soldiers were essentially only good for being thrown in as cannon-fodder. My teacher then outlined how Mountbatten had failed at every command he was given — although the fact that he was a prolific pedophile didn’t come up. I feel like that’s the other side of Canadian Cope in regards to this event — either it was a necessary battle to learn lessons for D-Day, or it was a colossal failure that could all be laid at the feet of Mountbatten. Interestingly enough, Mountbatten absolutely become persona non grata in Canada after the war. May he rest in piss.
