2022-02-21 14:05:03 +0000 UTCIf you are interested, "Greg's Airplanes" channel is by far the best channel for ww2 planes. He reads the original service manuals, and is a pilot himself. Often, people underestimate how close all these planes are to each other performance wise. The Hellcat was the first to use a dual stage supercharger, I believe with intercooling, which gave them a power-advantage in high altitude. However, one lesson that is never considered, is one the navy took to heart at that time: "You can offset a disadvantage in tech with superior training". The reason the navy one was they had a good plane, but improved their pilot training. The

The Japanese favored lighter planes with large caliber guns (more maneuverable but slower dive speeds and less armor) , and US favored heavier planes with small caliber guns (less maneuverable but faster dive speeds and armor). Then F6f Hellcat entered the war and somehow combined the best of both worlds, having more maneuverablity than the zero, but have bigger engine than the wildcat making it not only faster but allow it to carry way more armor and guns (something like 8 .50 cals).

2022-02-18 12:00:54 +0000 UTCI believe we knew we couldn’t outmaneuver the Japanese planes so we just made them be a tank with wings and let them soak rounds while other friendly pilots attacked the enemy plane.

2022-02-18 10:07:28 +0000 UTCYay Liam is thinking of the Thach weave which was used to make up for the wildcat's disadvantages early in the war. I swear I'm not a plane nerd.
