Nakchivan is the aliyev homeland. I showed up at the border (after seeing a museum about the Armenian genocide of Turks) ,was throughly interrogated and taken on a tour of a grocery store. My friend and I had people come into our “hotel room” unannounced several times to make sure we weren’t two guys having sex. Weirdest day of my life.

2022-02-16 11:50:00 +0000 UTCI studied Balkan history and culture in college and a lot of this sounds familiar to the rhetoric from hardline Balkan nationalist leaders too. I could go into that stuff in more detail but instead I’ll just mention a funnier story about studying the Balkans in college that also involves Azerbaijan. I was taking a class on Balkan humor and one of the guys in it was from Azerbaijan and what I’d heard, although I never saw any official confirmation, was that he was a close relative of President Aliyev (his last name was Aliyev anyway). On the first day, this guy makes a comment denying the Armenian genocide. Both professors look at each other, make a face and immediately tell him absolutely not. He made a pretty offended expression about it but they’d also pretty clearly told him to shut the fuck up and that they weren’t going to debate the validity of the Armenian genocide. Unsurprisingly, he was kind of an asshole for the rest of the semester.
