BONUS EPISODE: The USS William D Porter

What if you sucked so badly at your job you almost accidentally killed the president

BONUS EPISODE: The USS William D Porter

Comments

Finished all the regular episodes and finally working my way through the bonus episodes. Henry A Wallace is one of my favorite historical figures to learn about, so I was stupid excited to hear about him in this episode

Michelle

I was a submariner and 100% spot on. Everyone is either in their first enlistment or a lifer. Only caveat is that the nuclear enlisted sometimes do one re-enlistment because there's a huge re-enlistment bonus. And there's something called a STAR re-enlistment where if an E-4 nuke re-enlists, they get automatically advanced to E-5. Not me though, I did 6 and out and still made E-6 right before I got out because I'm a good test taker with a decent eval.

My buddy was going through the force recon course back in 2014 when one of his peers drowned. He said the instructor took them out of the pool and they had to go run around base while the body was being fished out. Brutal.

RF is a theory

Upped my level mainly for this episode.

Toured the Iowa recently. To solve the problem of FDR's wheelchair, they just cut out the entire bulkhead and watertight door leading into the presidential cabin and replaced it with a normal wooden door. If I recall correctly they also took a cutting torch to the bottom of the bulkheads in the hallway outside, so there's a nice several inch gap beneath each watertight door.

It's unlikely that a single torpedo is going to sink an Iowa class battleship.

The Navy's story on the Bonhomme Richard is bullshit. Just another scapegoat for command incompetence.

Didn't know what an NPR voice was, because I'm Asian. Can't agree anyway, since I listen to every episode on double speed for efficiency, and because otherwise everyone sounds a little drunk. Instead, pretty sure this show fires in my associational cortex as [ South Park ] + [ Armenio-Mormons ] + [ Military Hiccups + Pathos + Cold + Bootless] + [ Fatalistic + Rapscallions + Giggling ]. The giggling was particularly abundant in the trains episode of Well There's Your Problem. Works for me.

Devora Isaacs

I must have felt the same because about an hour after listening to this I watched me some Police Squad on the YouTube

Colm Hayes

Now I need a Willy D Stripes-esque ensemble comedy

Shawn Murphy

Great ep joe

Oscar Jimenez

Aww yes! I remember reading about the Willy Dee on Cracked around ten years ago, and she's been my favourite naval vessel ever since.

BlarryOfficial .

Bless their little hearts; they did their best. Yes, this bonus episode was worth my money! 😊

Can we get a tee shirt of this voyage of the damned

Grumpy Bowlart

The Dollop's "Willie Dee/worst ship in the entire US Navy" episode is a classic, too

Nick Thomson

YES! WILLIE DEE EPISODE! SOLID GOLD, BABY!!!

Nick Thomson

ZombieDwarf

Oh god yes. I was hoping you guys would eventually do an episode on this after watching potential history’s video on it.
