I went to Sun City as a really young kid on vacation in South Africa. I had no idea about it’s apartheid history… but six-year-old me did wonder what on earth it was doing there when there was so much abject poverty elsewhere in the country try.

However, I dont think even that works as a comparison because outside of doomsday preachers and the like the reality of a civil war in America at any point within our lifetimes barring some very insane change, is incredibly low. The same could not be said for South Africa in the 1990s

I spent most of my teenage years protesting apartheid with my family. It was a small contribution, but family friends died fighting the SADF in Angola and another went to prison for seven years for handing out leaflets. Fun apartheid fact: even carparks were segregated. Black people couldn't park their cars in white car parks.

Also, up until 2013 trans people who wanted to transition were forced to be sterilized. Just two examples. Denmark is awful too. They have fucking race laws aimed at muslims. Scandinavian countries are MUCH shittier than people think.

I don't have enough information to judge south Africa. If someone does I'd like to hear your scale.
