Really cool episode. I actually wrote my senior thesis on black soldiers who fought for the patriots. This episode is kinda making me wish I wrote about the loyalist black soldiers. Probably would’ve had a lot more sources as well

Sadly, the Krio's proximity and history with the Crown meant they reaped most of the benefits from the colonial administration at the expense of their local neighbors, which planted the inequity that would eventually bloom into a decade long civil war in the '90s-00s.

2021-12-20 15:58:47 +0000 UTCTheory for why they called it the “Ethiopian Regiment” despite it being inaccurate: the word “Ethiopian” derives from a Greek phrase meaning “burnt faces” & was a generic term in Classical times for anyone with dark skin. Presumably, the British commanders being all fancy boys with classical educations knew this & could have picked it for that reason

I am unfortunately a fellow swede and every time Liam talks about that stuff I wonder if he realizes how insanely shameful that is turning out to be. We have a reform nazi party that's like 50/50 to be in the next government here and they're openly talking about starting an ethnic cleansing. It's fucking insane and incredibly depressing. I realize that it's different if you're just an ethnic swede or whatever having grown up in the states and I'm not calling Liam out or anything but it would be nice if he could grumble "fuck sweden" everytime he mentions it or something.
