2025-02-23 02:47:10 +0000 UTCWhen I broke my leg and had to go to physical therapy, one of the only other person my age (I was a teen at the time) was a girl who's parents were Vietnamese. Her getting bone cancer in her femur was likely linked to Agent Orange ( never asked cause not my business). I still rage thinking about it. We're still friends (learning to walk again together tends to do that) but I still think about how much pain she was in.

2024-01-21 13:34:36 +0000 UTCMy dad dumped Agent Orange, I started losing my vision at 26. I've seen eye Dr's, neurologists from John Hopkins down to Emery, no Dr has seen an eye condition like mine. It's a dystrophy in my eyes and now I'm almost 43, my body is breaking down n crazy ways. All my Dr's agree it's prob the Agent Orange but Noone will put it in writing or go against the VA. It baffles me that Vietnam as a country recognizes genetic defects from it but the US will never admit it. I'm a genetic mess at this point

2023-06-23 14:12:44 +0000 UTCRelatively new patron here catching up on bonus episodes - I’ve got about a year left of college to get my bachelor’s of science in Chemistry & just a cursory glance at the number of chlorine and oxygen atoms in the chemical structure of agent orange is enough to make me go “oh this will react with a TON of things and probably produce toxic byproducts.” Also I audibly went “oh NO” so many times listening to the lack safety protocols in place; knew the situation with agent orange has been bad but not This Bad

2022-09-20 13:30:43 +0000 UTCFrancis should look into Times Beach. He's in StL so he's very close to the largest dioxin contaminated site in the USA. Caused by a guy with a truck being paid to dispose of agent orange waste products. The EPA paid 200 million for his disaster, but the government barely offered a 100th of that to Vietnam

2021-11-03 23:42:00 +0000 UTCThe "I am strongly in favour of using poisonous gas against uncivilized tribes" Churchill quote is way before ww2, 1919 I think - and hilariously isn't close to the most racist thing he had said at that point.

2021-11-03 15:24:46 +0000 UTCJust submitted a report where Agent Orange in Vietnam was a policy case study, appreciate this episode as a small dose of levity after exploring the subject.. I did have to look at the genetic defects that resulted. It was not pleasant, but it's very important to see. The psychological and physical impact on veterans, and hence their role as NGOs in supporting victims in Vietnam reminded me a lot of the Hercules-Hydra myth as used to describe the consequences of chem & bio warfare described by A. Mayor's 'Greek fire, poison arrows, and scorpion bombs' (2003). When you decide to use these tools to expedite an outcome, whether economic or military, the ruin tends to seep into more than one ever anticipated.

2021-11-03 02:24:22 +0000 UTCI know you sometimes take some of the Patreon exclusive episodes and re-release them for the free platforms after a while, and if you have some kind of waiting list for that I would definitely put this one on it so this topic can reach a bigger audience. This was a really good episode
