I know I'm YEARS late, but I think that Ignaz Semmelweis might have been the first surgeon who recommended hand-washing (typically disinfecting, not just soap-and-water) and other doctors thought that it was stupid and crazy even though women he worked on were way less likely to die in childbirth than those under the care of other surgeons.

2024-04-23 00:38:10 +0000 UTCPlease do episodes about Francis Pegahmagabow: the Canadian-First Nation WW1 sniper. And, Adrian Carton de Wiart: an unkillable badass on the level of that kilt wearing longbow/claymore wielding psycho from ww2

2021-11-09 17:30:55 +0000 UTCI’d say it’s better than the formula, since Blade starts the movie knowing what he’s doing and the standard Marvel formula is at least half a movie of fucking around and incompetence before figuring it out just in time for the final fight.

2021-11-09 16:51:37 +0000 UTCBlade: is a great black vampire movie. I’d say Wesley Snipes invented the marvel hero formula

2021-11-08 16:28:30 +0000 UTCI second that recommendation, you could even make an episode on the pilot, Sharpe certainly is hampered by TV-tropes and relatively low budget, but it still gets many historical details right and the commeradery inside the main unit is well developed, in my opinion.

2021-11-08 15:27:31 +0000 UTCOn the topic of aristocratic military incompetence, I’d offer up the suggestion of watching the Sharpe TV series. Also suggest an episode on the Putney Debates, which is about soldiers demanding a society worth fighting for in wartime.

2021-11-08 05:35:44 +0000 UTCThe Romans colonised most of the place centuries before then and they did bare awful massacres and enslavement, We even have a 10th century Welsh prophetic poem talking about all corners of the archipelago uniting to kick out the tax and rent loving Anglos to free the Britains.

2021-11-07 00:20:15 +0000 UTCBritain has been colonized actually: Both the Anglo Saxons (from you know, Saxony) and the Danes definitely did a whole lot there, though there was less genocide involved. It's why the english language is such a hot mess.

2021-11-06 15:43:10 +0000 UTCI've only ever been a support soldier. But bitching and moaning and trying to get out of work even while you're under attack is a vibe I feel deep in my bones.

2021-11-06 12:25:35 +0000 UTCAs a nursing student about to graduate, I'm glad you mentioned Florence Nightingale and evidence based practice, even if this is a military history podcast. It was a pleasant surprise.

2021-11-05 21:34:49 +0000 UTCI wrote a paper on the Crimean War in college and used a book printed in 1855 as a source. It mentioned how you could always tell where the surgical tents were because they always had heaps of amputated limbs out in front of them.

2021-11-05 19:57:00 +0000 UTCIn undergrad we were reading The Economist archive for something else, and on a hunch I checked the dates following this. The only report was a wildly positive dispatch about how well it went. So, that much hasn't changed.
