You mentioned that the crusaders hoped to pay of their debts with loot. How would that work in the economy of the time? Would they literally seize gold and consumer goods that had value in Europe?

If not, my admiration for not seizing any opportunity to mention how Henry, King of Jerusalem, died by leaning too far OR being startled out of a window, plunging to the streets below with this trusty midget Scarlet. Reportedly. Or how the approaching, potentially pivotal Christian army led by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa melted gently away after he died: By falling face first into shallow water and drowning, with no accounts detailing any attempt of anyone to intervene in those crucial 2-4 minutes. Probably was also too weak from dysentery to get up, armoured or otherwise… No shortage of absurd material if you do in fact decide to do more Crusades. Or almost anything medieval.
