EARLY: The Aleutians Islands Campaign
Added 2021-08-19 20:01:24 +0000 UTCOne of the dumbest campaigns from WWII happened in the US and was way dumber than you probably remember from history class.

Aww, thanks for the shout out to Russia, but of course they did the normal awful things like sell guns to one side and then the other and try to enserf people. Pretty much the "dispossionist" party of the church (monks who didn't believe the church should own serfs) vs. the Royal Alaskan companies. The monks actually held their own for once. This was after killing all the sea cows and during the sea otter rush. No telling what would have happened if Russians had stumbled on Klondike after the otters got scarce and before selling to America. 2021-08-25 12:42:55 +0000 UTCNot a big fan of most conspiracy theories, but I think the one where a secret service agent got spooked by Oswald's first shot and accidentally domed JFK sounds at least kind of plausible.

2021-08-25 03:07:19 +0000 UTCThe conspiracy theory I believe: There was a massive conspiracy of the mob, CIA, GOP, Cuban exiles, etc. to off JFK, they had a plan, then before they could some random yokel named Oswald beat them to it. And they just shrugged and moved on.

2021-08-24 22:31:06 +0000 UTCHave you read shattered sword? They talk at length about the start of this and about how it interracted with the battle of midway. The 3 distributions that were planned was crazy - they were planning on stationing a CV (zuikaku), two CVLs and about 30 other ships up there when it was all said and done.

2021-08-24 09:44:50 +0000 UTCIf the American forces had only had someone with the testicular fortitude to say "Commando!" there would have been no problem taking those glorified ocean rocks.

2021-08-24 00:15:55 +0000 UTCMy maternal grandfather was stationed in Alaska during ww2 and said that they were told a bunch of times they were the line of defense preventing invasion of the lower 48. He said the fear of japans invasion abilities was pretty large in 1941-42
