Thank you for responding. Browning's description of Goldhagen's cultural characteristics of Germans raised my red flags. I studied business history in grad school and generally rebel against cultural explanations of historical developments, but Goldhagen sounded particularly ahistorical in his condemnation. I also found Browning's use and explanation of sources a refreshing example in how to do solid academic history and it made me slow to criticize him. But I'm always skeptical of historians shitting on critics because the warring egos is something I remember well. I'll give Goldhagen a look at some point just to see what he argues and ensure I'm not straw manning him.

Hi - Have you guys considered doing the First Anglo-Afghan War? It has all the classics, imperial power trying to interfere in Afghan factional politics and fucking up, British incompetence, including a doddering old general having his entire army get totally wiped out in a horrifying retreat through the snow because he's too crippled with gout. 'Return of a King' by William Dalrymple is a really good history of it using a lot of Afghan source and placing in context of the recent Afghan war. Thanks for the great show guys!

Is the notion that the Treaty of Versailles was overly punitive to Germany highly exaggerated or worse, pure bullshit peddled by the same German right-wingers/militarists who promoted the “we would’ve won if we hadn’t been stabbed in the back by Social Democrats/Jews” (those right-wingers including the literal military dictator of WWI Germany Erich Ludendorff)? Why not delve into the Siege of Kut, 1915-1916, starring the ultimate donkey, the very pompous General Charles Townshend. Best of all, it occurred in that land of magic and mayhem, Mesopotamia, or what we now call Iraq. A movie suggestion: Captain Conan by Bertrand Tavernier. Don't think it's streaming. But it's an odd bird in that it's a WWI film, centers on the relationship between a French captain of commandos and a schoolteacher lieutenant who is assigned to him, and ends just after WWI with a Russian attach on a French prison camp (from my limited knowledge of post-WWI European history- WTF?).
