EARLY EPISODE: The Namibian Genocide Part 2: Shark Island

The second and last part of our series on the Namibian Genocide.

Comments

Holy shit. Even throughout all the other episodes full of genocides and other atrocities I thought the animal facts bit was there mostly for humor - but this time I really needed every single one of those animal facts so fucking bad.

Listening to this was incredibly Grim. But good to finally learn about it. Didn´t learn much about it in School, it´s not talked about outside of a few documentaries. Pretty infuriating that it took over a hundred years to even try to make amends for it.

Shettyhengst

Hopefully another animal episode

I like that Joe included the part about the German parliament apologising cause I mentioned it in the comment section last episode; also as a German listener I can firstly fully understand why some people hate us considering all of the horrible shit and the amount of genocides Germany committed and secondly it is fucking beyond me how it took so long to recognise it as a genocide

I normally listen to episodes twice but I dont think I can subject myself to that this time. You beat me guys

Well that was fucking grim. But if you feel bad about the universities loosing their lovely skull collection there are still some left and we don’t really know where there they are from. Also the Ethnological Museums still have Plundered Art and are somewhat hesitant to talk about that.

@ I am a huge fan of Dan Carlin. I love listening to his stuff while driving or going to work. I’ll admit, sometimes I need some standup comedy between episodes to make feel better lol

Here is my own personal palet cleanser, Erdogan getting his nuts destroyed by a horse: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKPRvMV2SL8&ab_channel=JOKERN

Dan Carlin's reading of the book "descent into hell" is actually the worst fucking thing I have ever listened to, if you havent heard it, dont.

jackson macpherson

Just out of curiosity why Hippopotamus leather? Abundant resource, strong material or something else?

jackson macpherson

That was way worse than the Khmer series. OMG, I just had nightmares about it. Can we have a nice episode next, please. PLEASE!

Christian Carrillo

I'm with Liam, I don't eat lamb or tomatoes

Kieran Shook-Parker

Joe, you’re on your way to be like Dan Carlin. If people thought this was grim, they should listen to him.

Anthony9286

Incredibly grim episode. Jesus Christ…

It seems the Germans really liked their trading cards, there is also a set about the Anschluss of Austria. I own the collector's album for that one because I found it while clearing out a dead guy's flat for the estate and didn't want it to turn up with someone who wanted it for Nazi-related reasons rather than as an historical curio. But I am surprised the practice goes back that far in history.

Walter Teply-Schnabl

"We found it in the basement" is literally how it usually goes when it comes to stolen skulls. I live in Uppsala, Sweden, home of the first (and leading) government run institute of "race science". I guess most people don't know about this but sweden has conducted a centuries long genocide against the Sami and as part of that A LOT of skulls and skeletons were stolen from them from about 1850 until the 1930s. They're still finging boxes of skulls and stuff in the basements of different university buildings here. Also, the Sami are STILL fighting legal battles to recover their ancestral remains, TO THIS FUCKING DAY. I hate my country.

Anders Olsson

I’m a Zimbabwean, not to be that guy but it’s pronounced “Sham-Bok”. Kinda like ShamWow. It’s a traditional whip made from hippopotamus leather used for driving cattle and killing snakes.

Please don't ask why.

Elder Dog

Don't look up the Shark Island Wikipedia article. It makes Joe's description so much worse.

Elder Dog

This is the greatest Presidential clip of all time.
