2021-05-08 00:12:24 +0000 UTCLate to this episode, but I wanted to share a Field Service Notebook message from The OC of C Coy, 29th Infantry Battalion, written just after the bloody two-week fight over The craters at St-Eloi in Belgium. Apologies for sharing it in full, but it does speak to the Ross situation: "May 3rd, 1916. Report Re: Ross Rifles Jamming. a) in attack made by the enemy on No 6 Crater on the night of Apr 18-19 when my Company was in garrison there. Majority of rifles jammed by mud & water thrown over them by enemy bombs, after five rounds in magazine had been discharged. b) Sorry to say the men have NOT every confidence in the rifle in their possession, except for sniping with. c) The rifle does not work smoothly when men are excited, no matter how much practice they may get when out of the trenches. I have seen men go almost frantic in their endeavours to keep the rifle going when mud is flying about especially after the first fifteen rounds of rapid fire. (Signed) W. Latta, Major, O.C. C Coy."
