Very common in late WW2 to have replacements fed into combat units into jobs they had not been trained for. Lots of people don’t realize how desperate Eisenhower was for infantry replacements in the latter stages of the European campaign. Not such a big deal for Norman as the assistant driver on a Sherman is just basically another machine gunner although in some command tanks, the assistant driver was also a radio operator.
