The two most important steps in my work are sketch and flat color. Usually I do these on separate layers, and I use the flat color layer to help with my selections when rendering.
I also add subtle base gradients for things like knees, asses, or ends of tails and arms. The gradients turn a flat color into a more dynamic color base.
