That Other Sonic the Hedgehog Writing Experiment
Added 2020-08-07 16:26:15 +0000 UTCI may as well throw this in here, too. Here's something I started writing on a whim -- on the subject on whether Sega's "Sonic Mania Adventures" shorts could ever be adapted for anything else, I tried imagining the story to the original Sonic Adventure in that style.
This is a full-beans script. I went out of my way to write it like real, actual movie scripts are written. I don't skip anything with easy summaries. It is unfinished, though. The gimmick of having zero spoken dialog made this progressively harder to write. I don't think it's impossible to do, but I worry it would wear thin for something this long.
If you go by standard script writing "best practices" there's about six minutes of story described here, and about seven pages worth of text. As I said, eventually I got bored. It covers the basic intro to the story, introducing Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Eggman and Chaos. It ends when Knuckles enters Station Square for the first time.
After that, I jotted down a few story beats and some basic characterization so I wouldn't forget, should I ever choose to revisit this. They look like I'm just describing known Sonic Adventure stuff, but the idea for this wasn't that I'd just copy every single individual existing story beat. If this was pitched as a movie (or a series of episodes) then I would expect the game's somewhat scattershot storyline would have to be focused down a bit. If you read it, that much should be obvious, given how I skip certain scenes from the game (but still find other ways to incorporate their story beats organically).
Anyway, some of this originated on a tumblr post a few months ago, but as you'll find, there's a bit more text here. Unfortunately, I have no current plans to continue it. I feel like it does actually need dialog, but adding dialog to earlier scenes might be weird, since they were designed WITHOUT dialog. So I don't know.
