Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Full Length Reaction

A delightfully fun movie that doesn't take itself too seriously!

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Full Length Reaction

Comments

I am by no means a DandD expert, so this is just my assumption: I see what you meant about how this movie had an overall blistering pace. The film probably would've benefitted from more peaks and valleys. However, I think the pace and structure were probably just reflections of the kind of story that the filmmakers wanted to tell (and what's required to prevent a modern audience from checking their text messages), rather than being reflections of the source material. I think DandD as a game experience is freeform enough that they could've told a much more leisurely story if they'd wanted to. I do wish that there were a few more quiet moments sprinkled in, a couple shots held slightly longer--just enough to let the viewers' minds take a break and let us feel as though we were living with the characters, rather than us feeling "reactive" at every moment. That said, I still ended up loving the movie. I really enjoyed the wit and the likability of the characters. I also found the ending to be genuinely moving. Hopefully it does well enough on streaming that we get a sequel someday. (Also, I have no idea what was going on with your subtitles. Yes, the part with Sofina talking in the red wizard language, telling her men to kill Forge's guards had subtitles in the theater, and in my digital copy. There were also subtitles when Rege-Jean Page was talking with the undead assassins, right before he fought them.)

I've also barely been to the movie theaters since the pandemic 😭 I'm so glad you enjoyed the movie, and I enjoy hearing how much gamers enjoyed it. I thought it was such a fun film, and that it worked as an adaptation as well is wonderful to hear!

I've now seen the edited reaction another reactor posted, and I was right. This was like the filmed version of a tabletop RPG session. I was smiling throughout (and chuffed that they included 1st Edition creatures like the Owl Bear, Displacer Beast, Gelatinous Cube and Mimic!) Tabletop RPGs are definitely as much a time sink. as video games.

I hadn't been out to a theater since just before the pandemic (Onward), and this D&D movie was finally the one that drew me back out again. It was a delight to watch with my whole D&D gaming group, and to watch it again with you now! I love that it's just /fun/ and I can see all the silly influences from the source material and that sense of group storytelling.

"All this failure has to lead to success eventually!" That's my family motto! :D

I could definitely see what you mean about the humor! (And being nerdy is nothing to be ashamed of 😄) I hope it becomes available there soon, because it really was a lot of fun, and I'm so curious to hear more about what DnD gamers thought of it. I swear, everyone around me plays, and has been trying to get me to for ages. For me, it's more a lack of free time than anything else. But who knows? Maybe sometime 😊

It's still not available on Amazon Prime in the UK, but all the previews for it made me feel like it was made by people who appreciated the anarchy that an RPG group can subject a game session to. I was a tabletop gamer from my pre teen years in the 80's. D&D was my gateway drug. By the early 90s I was President of my high school's role playing and war gaming club. ( Yes, I was every bit as tragic a nerd as you are imagining.) I still haven't seen the movie, but I feel it's humour comes from players of RPGs and how their characters react to Very Serious situations.

I did two early previews. The first one was for Amazon Prime members and that was super cool. I’d say 60-75% of the theater was in full cosplay. That’s the most people I’d seen in costume personally for a premiere.

Exactly! Any complaints I had were really just nitpicking, and I would definitely watch it again! Would've been a fun one in theaters 😄

I definitely love this movie. Saw it 3 weekends in a row with 3 different groups of people. Lol Just a good time that doesn’t make you anxious or make you follow a super complicated plot. It’s just fun and entertaining.
