I do think trying different papers and mediums can be quite revealing, it forces you to think differently to how you solve problems. I might suggest vine charcoal over the pencil, especially when you’re developing the transitions. I just say that because vine charcoal is the most forgiving and is by far the easiest to remove. Maybe not causing as much unevenness from the kneeded eraser. I think I work a bit like you, applying and removing, sometimes many times until I feel I have better tonal transitions and yes I also struggle with the pentimenti left behind. Perhaps trying some exercises might help. I’d try the technique of no eraser, use hatching only and use vine charcoal. The thinner sticks can be nice when developing the tones because you can’t push to hard or you break them. Start light and slowly hatch and cross hatch until you get the value range your after. This doesn’t solve the staining issue that the kneeded eraser leaves behind but it might help train your eye so that you don’t need to use the eraser as much.

Hi Bryce ! after a frustrated drawing afternoon I would like to ask you some questions about controlling values. I practice a lot with the egg/sphere light and dark but when it comes to human figure I end up in a never ending process of put my darks, remove, put again. Even the kneaded eraser doesn’t help because most of the time left spot and stain and ruin all the previous work. How can I handle that? I used newsprint paper by Strathmore and General’s charcoal, in order to have the same tools as yours.. thank you so so much!!

Let me see if I can do this without hitting the wrong buttons🤦‍♂️ I would try a few different papers and see which ones release the charcoal better. It’s one reason I started using toned paper I find it easier to control those mid values. And when I tone my own paper the acrylic seems to help seal the paper which keeps the charcoal on top more.. So really I don’t think it’s you as much as just figuring out which mediums work best with your techniques. And yes that would make for a great video.

And same tools, as General’s charcoal for example.. I think is my lack of controlling values 😓
