Video Tutorial: Learning to Push your Color, pt 1of 2- Jan 2021

Sitting Figure: An Oil Study (40 min)

When I shot this video last year, I was plagued with a multitude of technical issues ( I should say user errors ). So I put it aside for a while and just recently decided to attempt editing it.  I think I managed to smooth out and remove most of the problems and what's left, hopefully won't be noticed- much. There's some great footage and verbal information (even with my babbling).

I'm currently editing part 2 and will have it out at the first of February. You can't imagine where it goes:-).

So I hope you get something out of it and please go ahead and ask any questions below.

I've attached an image of the models pose.

As always, the images are just for you, use them on your computer, print them out or change them any way you see fit but please don’t share the actual photos online. Fallon appreciates your professionalism and discretion. Thank you.

Thank you Patrick! I think a lot comes from just miles and miles of painting, it becomes intuitive to some degree and not so literal after you get enough ah-ha moments about color temperature. But I do try to think about what temperature the light is and that includes the reflected light and I balance that with some of the warms to make sure the flesh feels alive.

Great video, gorgeous painting! I was really focused on how you pushed the subtle almost nonexistent colors (especially the greens and blues in her skin). How did you decide where to add the cooler cools and warmer warms? I couldn't see them in the photo but the effect was so real, like the model was sitting in front of you! Amazing!

Hey Greg, Yes the changing light was directly related to the changing outside light. On this video I forgot to set the color exposure so it would change easily, including movements from my arm. So yep that was a mistake in this video. I think that little brush was a Rosemary #2 series 276 filbert. Your right about the face bringing in the attention so thinking about it in those terms, I think the face turned out nicely. I guess it just went against what my plans were in the beginning. Editing is very time consuming for sure, but strangely satisfying. Thanks for watching, glad you liked it!

Bryce, I need to go back and watch more of your videos. This is great. Just a few, I noticed notes: 1. The color of your painting kept changing overtime...was wondering if that was the outside light changing, then sometimes I would see when you brought your hand in more and then pulled out. 2. I was wondering what brushes sizes you were using on the face in the fine gestures. 3. I thought it would be ok to have the face a little more defined than the body to bring you attention to it. I saw some Gaudi paintings where some were crazy defined and some not so in the same painting...Lastly, I don't know much about video editing, but it looks like it would take up a lot of time. Thanks for doing it...Looking forward to the next one...
