Questions? Video on Language Learning

Hey everyone,

I'm doing a whirlwind project to get out one more video before the end of the month before I do some traveling in Oosaka. The topic of language learning is something I've been meaning to discuss for a while, but what would y'all like to see addressed?

What about specific techniques you used that were very valuable when learning a language to fluency? Techniques that were a waste of time?

Would love to hear your thoughts!

I'd like to learn how you can transition from knowing a handful of phrases (hello, how are you, etc.) to holding basic conversations. I just moved to Estonia and while I have the basic greetings down, as soon as anyone responds with anything, I need to switch back to English because I don't have the vocabulary to form an answer. Very frustrating!

I have a shameless love for Esperanto, which has always been touted as a stepping stone for language learning. For despite not keeping up too strongly with regular study, it's not been too difficult to retain what I've learned, while I've forgotten nearly all of what I once knew of Spanish having studied it for school prior. One of these days I may teach myself another language and utilize that benefit of Esperanto, but for now I've simply enjoyed using the constructed language. Otherwise Duolingo is a fairly popular gamified language learning platform nowadays, same with Memrise. I've enjoyed playing games in the language I'm trying to learn too, kind of grounds your learning to reality and forces you to learn various terminology. Interestingly, language-learning chatrooms I don't think has been helpful, as there is a tendency to propagate common grammatical errors when there's not a lot of active fluent folks around to correct the beginners. On the same coin, at least for Esperanto, chat rooms are also a breeding ground for slang that originates from other languages, especially English.
