Netflix’s “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” -- previously "Connected" by Sony Animation Studios starring Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph and Olivia Colman -- has within it LGBTQ representation with the main character Katie Mitchell, played by Abbi Jacobson. The problem is that Katie’s queer identity is only limited to small visual aspects and “blink-and-you’ll-miss-it” moments in comparison to the rest of her character. So why wasn’t Katie’s queerness more prominent in the movie? Here’s what I believe is the answer.
