Patreon Newsletter #40: February 2025

Magic Tavern Updates/News:

 From Arnie:

My birthday month! Had a bunch of friends over to play Blood on the Clocktower at my house and drink cocktails made by a bartender. Very fun, but I definitely drank too much to be playing a complicated social deduction game and during the last game I forgot Adal and I were both on the evil team and kept trying to secretly use my power on him, which seemed to confuse Rush Howell who was running the game. (Special thanks to my incredible girlfriend Emily for arranging everything and playing a very complicated game that she probably didn’t really have very much interest in learning.)

Also, we returned to San Francisco Sketchfest for a whirlwind weekend of catching up with friends and eating good food. I’ll keep my namechecking to a minimum but it was nice to catch up with Rachel Bloom and her husband (their show was great), had some fun drinks and the next day brunch with Stuart and Dan from the Flophouse. The best part, though, was getting to meet and perform with Richard Kind who was a delight. After the show he said, “You know, I used to not like improv very much… and now I hate it!”

From Matt:

January 2025

Fought off illness a couple of times this month which is going to make this newsletter a bit shorter on my end.

I did get to spend a great weekend in San Francisco with Arnie, Adal, many friends, and significant others. Good food, great shows (both to watch and perform). It's always a joy to be part of SF Sketchfest (and getting to do a show with Richard Kind was amazing). Plus, we had an in-person recording session for the first time since 2020! More about that in a future newsletter…

Games

Finally started Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Five years behind the curve is actually pretty decent for me.

TV/Movies/Web stuff:

I mostly slept through things on YouTube and free streaming while trying not to be sick. Started reading an actual book on the plane back from Sketchfest. Anderson Cooper’s Astor: The Rise and Fall of an American Fortune.

Food:

I made a mushroom farro risotto which I know I’ll be able to improve on a second pass. I also made a beef bourguignon which almost killed me. It made me late to a recording and I hurt my hand cutting the roast (blister from the handle; didn’t cut myself). It was Ina Garten’s recipe (I don’t blame the Contessa!) and I did eventually get it done and enjoy it. I intended it to be a feast for while my mother was visiting, but due to all our various illnesses, her holiday visit was delayed (twice now). That means I won’t be able to report on our Christmas gift exchange until the end of February.

Same! It’s so much fun. I managed to solve most of the medium puzzles but I still have no idea how to use that astrology key to decipher the coded text from that section. I’m on to the hard puzzles now but it still haunts me that I never could figure it out lol
