Pi day video followup

Hey folks!

Looking at the poll I put out last week for whether or not the Pi day video should be Patreon-funded like other videos, it looks like we have a  noticeable-but-not-overwhelming tilt towards making it Patreon-funded.

In poking around the Patreon tools a bit more, I found that even though you can't have an opt-in-to-being-charged post (which would be nice), there is a notion of a refund.  So what I think I'll do is mark this video as a paid post, and for any of you who feel like you'd rather limit your support to the more typical focus-on-visualizing-math style videos, send me a direct message (and please, feel no guilt in doing so), and I'll refund it.

It's important to me that each of you feels like the funds you provide go towards the channel's mission of deepening peoples' relationship with math.  I'm optimistic the pi day video does that, in its own way, though the main focus will always be on the deeper videos.  For what it's worth, a good amount of work did go toward that one, even though much of it was scrapped when we decided it made more sense to do a shorter video.

The final version of Winding numbers is just about wrapped out, so you should see that quite soon!  Take a look at the first half posted on Patreon if you haven't already.  This one turned out to be a monster of a project, largely because of the different type of visuals involved for so many of the scenes.

Ive completly over looked the post xD

So interesting. For some reason I didn't even see the poll, though I did see the post and even left a comment. And from the comments it seemed there was a strong consensus towards not paying for the video. But apparently people who actually voted felt otherwise :) Just interesting.

I presume you mean this for Grant to implement; as we can implement this system ourselves if we wish. A counter-argument is that the flat rate wouldn't take into account the variability of production output; what if he makes 3 videos in a month, or takes a well-deserved rest and doesn't make any that month? However, I am personally fine with that. I'm convinced enough by his work that I'm willing to financially support the existence of this channel, rather than the creation of each video.

For whatever this is worth, my own personal preference would be to pay a flat monthly amount rather than a per-video amount. Because I prefer the predictability of it and because I'd be happier if you didn't have to consider this sort of thing when making creative decisions. If you had 60 minutes of content and had the option of presenting it as three 20 minute videos, one 60 minute video, or twelve 5 minute videos, I'd rather you were free to choose the option that you feel is best from a creative and educational standpoint, not the one that meshes best with your funding model. It's not an important enough issue that it would effect whether I continue to support you, but it would be my preference.

I pay $10/month for Netflix, and not everything on Netflix is to my taste. I can't see it any different for you ... just because one or two videos might not be to my taste, doesn't make me any less willing to pay. Having said that ... that Pi video was amazingly informative.

With such quality videos and a dedicated heartヽ(`Д´)ノ There’s no reason why we shouldn’t support you
