The lines leading up to the reveal he sabotaged erens belt made me believe he didn't intend to be petty or spiteful, but that he wanted to save Eren from the fate Sadie's thinks he's foreshadowed. Right before that, he said something like "you're set ablaze with determination to burn your life to ashes outside the wall" or whatever I know I butchered it, and how he was talking to Grisha like "you'll set your son along this path?". It didn't seem petty it seemed maybe, defiant? Like Keith didn't live up to the hype and he burned himself and others outside the wall, so he tried to fail Eren with the faulty belt so Eren wouldn't die also trying to achieve "special status", considering his mom said he doesn't need to be special, he was born to the world and that's good enough. I might be misinterpreting things though but he seemed like, idk like he thought he was being merciful. Or if he can achieve anything in this world let it be that he saved Carla's son from dying to titans outside the walls

2023-08-28 11:26:49 +0000 UTCOne of my fave understated eps! Also I think you may have misunderstood Keith at the end scene there - he wasn't trying to sabotage Eren because he was upset at his dad, he did it to try and protect Eren and save Carla's child. He didn't want Eren to become a soldier and die outside the walls purely for the sake of avenging his mother, as Grisha told him to. It's why he said "And you, just as your father wanted... chose to set ablaze your life... which will burn to ashes outside the walls." Keith saw Grisha's labeling of someone as "special" as a curse that would lead to ruin and disappointment, and wanted to protect Eren from that future in case he too wasn't a "special one". And so he sabotaged Eren's gear in an attempt to get him to give up and choose another path in life, only to witness Eren do the impossible and stay upright on broken gear. You can see the resignation and acceptance of still being unable to change anything enter his eyes upon witnessing that. Hence the phrase "I still couldn't change anything at all... I'm a mere bystander."
