There's a few little jokes you might not be familiar with. The look of the elves, the north pole, and the snowman were based on the old Rankin/Bass stop-motion classic 'Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer'. Watch it this Christmas season if you can find it. They actually didn't get permission to use that as a reference for 'Elf', so there were legal issues that almost stopped the movie. The grainy footage of Buddy walking through Central Park is a joke on the famous Patterson–Gimlin film of Bigfoot that later turned out to be a hoax. That's another thing to look up on YouTube when you get a chance.
