Great reaction Dasha! Really fun to watch. "Ambiance" is not just the background music, but any feature of the environment that sets the mood. Could be lighting, decorations, smells, etc. The guy was hurting himself because he's a flagellant, a rather extreme religious person that believes that sin is purged through suffering. It's not as common nowadays. For a similar treasure hunt movie, see 'National Treasure'. For a great thriller with Jean Reno and lots of car chases, see 'Ronin'.
