Everyone is messed up in the movie. They’re all unhappy with who they are and their place in the world. But, ultimately, I think it’s about finding beauty in the mundane. Lester realizes in the end that he had forgotten to see the beauty in his family and his ordinary life. And the little visuals he sees the moment before he dies fills him with gratitude for all of it. Unfortunately, the point was that most of us won’t feel that gratitude until our final moment. By the way, the only happy, well-functioning characters are the gay neighbors. Oh, and creepy neighbor guy is the game maker from Hunger Games.

He was creepy, but I think he redeemed himself by not going through with Angela and his last, happy thoughts were of his daughter and wife.
