Commodus was a real Emperor and supposedly mentally ill. He also supposedly "fought" in the arena but the fights were kind of staged so he'd never loose. He didn't die in the arena but was assassinated. Maximus was not a real person but loosely based on a few real people including Spartacus.

2022-06-15 06:19:37 +0000 UTCI just got my Extended Edition DVD and really enjoyed the reaction. If you like this movie, I'd like to recommend another classic gladiator movie. 'Spartacus' (1960) with Kirk Douglas. It's a true story (with the usual Hollywood embellishment). There aren't many reactors that do movies before the 1970's and that's too bad, because classic cinema was some of the best.
