I also love this episode! One of many comedy bangers this season! I also love all the metaphors and more subtle themes and meanings underneath the surface. Like the whole ‘hidden identity’ theme in this one. How Buffy and Kathy’s hidden identity is also driving the friction. And it takes Buffy ‘unmasking’ Kathy and essentially coming clean to ‘overcome’ the episodes ‘bad guy’. It’s also really thematically relevant for this season. Then you have the whole concept of Buffy ‘losing her soul’ or essentially exposing us to this idea of her losing her humanity. It helps us as an audience see why she needs her human connections. Her human relationships and her strong and generally unwavering moral compass. Why she can’t just be the slayer and ignore her human identity. It reminds us that it is essential to not only her survival, but her success as the slayer. Which re-enforces her leaving the council and forging her own rules. It reminds us why she is different and why her rebellion from oppressive systems sets her apart. I also love how it can go from pure comedy one week to serious and heavy topics the next and still essentially always feel like it’s Buffy. Even when the episode is tonally or stylistically entirely different, it never feels disconnected from the story or characters. I think the cast is often grossly underrated in their abilities here. This season is so much fun.

2025-04-29 09:11:10 +0000 UTCI love this episode so much, I find it endlessly charming -- and the magical thing about BtVS is that you can have such a "silly" episode, and yet all of those much more serious undercurrent friendship dynamics you were speaking of are also very much present! So much more to dig into this season, can't wait.
