The vast majority of the American revolutionary militia were armed with common smoothbore hunting flintlocks, with the majority of those being the French "fusil de chasse". "Fusil de chasse" translates roughly to "gun of the hunt" and is still a French term today used for "shotgun".

The "Settlers" of the time, be they Spanish, French, or from the various British dominated areas, generally were in "The New World" to Escape the Old. Money was Short, So "Inexpensive" was important. Military Surplus was the Key. As the Worlds Militaries Upgraded, Like Today. Previously used arms were fairly abundant, Unless there was a War On. In fact the Countries needing Colonists to Increase and Protect It's Territories, would make them available to the Militias for Self Protection. That they could be Dual Use made it even better.
