DxD: The Sorcery System Chapter 39

[Azazel’s Laboratory, Underworld]
“These are all… Sacred Gears?”
“Prototypes,” he corrected me. “Modeled after some of the most common Sacred Gears you can find.”
Swords, gauntlets, spears, armor.
It was an armory of weapons, magical weapons, and I dare say that even without them being Sacred Gears, they could outperform any weapons used by humans.
Except for nukes.
Or does he have something that can match nuclear warheads?
“Can you stand over there?” he pointed to a disc-like platform.
“The metallic platform?” I moved there without much thought.
There weren’t any ringing sounds or tingling sensations in my head, so it wasn’t harmful.
Yes, I had a built-in alarm system. The Sixth Sense didn’t only come with the ability to see someone’s stats but also to warn me of potential danger.
And I was right.
All the platform did was release a yellow light around me and then vanish just as instantly.
“I guess I was right,” he mumbled. “It isn’t a gear that you have.”
So this yellow light was scanning me?
“Don’t tell me you brought me here expecting a gear.” I had mentioned using magic, but I guess it’s harder to believe that a human can use magic after being part of the supernatural world than simply lying about their Gear.
“No,” he said, though he wasn’t interested in the Sacred Gear at the moment.
At the moment being the important part.
“I don’t know much about your magic. I expected it to be linked to a gear of sorts, but that isn’t the case.” He smiled. “So it is something rare.”
“You aren’t planning on cutting me open, are you?”
From what I had seen, he was a scientist.
A supernatural scientist.
And curious men were the scariest.
However, he was better than most.
“I wouldn’t dare,” he laughed. “To harm a boy that the Gremory heiress is eyeing is a rather stupid move.”
I mean… it was not surprising that he knew about it. Rias hasn’t been subtle about her desire to have me in her peerage.
And well, she was indeed desperate.
But she did calm down a little after Riser agreed to have me fight against him.
She was hesitant to ask; she didn’t want me involved without me being part of her peerage. There had to be a reason for me to take that fight, and the quest I received, along with the disgust I felt towards Riser, worked as the reason.
“Cutting you open won’t help me figure out your magic.” So he did think about it. “It’s better to have you around and figure things out. And who knows, I might learn something that could help me advance in my Sacred Gear studies.”
He was quite open about his aspirations.
He wanted to create a Sacred Gear, study his father’s craftsmanship, and maybe even surpass him.
I don’t know if that was possible, but for someone as obsessed as him, nothing seemed impossible.
“So, what exactly do you want me to do?”
I can’t just be doing nothing now, can I?
“I want you to document my progress, provide me with the equipment I need, and maybe even use your magic to speed up my processes.” He grinned. “A lab assistant of sorts.”
This feels like I’m about to be worked to the bone.
“I will transfer you a million yen by tonight, so I hope you can make yourself comfortable here.”
“Just tell me what I need to do, sir.” Money. “I’ll do it right away.”
That was one hell of a motivator.
…
…
[Afternoon — Takeda Residence]
{Raynare}
Money.
That was the motivator I lacked.
“You don’t have to push yourself too hard, Raynare.”
I had tried for quite a while to remove the stain from one of the tiles, but it just wasn’t possible.
Too tough of a stain.
“It’s alright, ma’am.” At least she wasn’t unbearable. “The house is pretty much clean, and all the clothes are washed. This is the only spot left.”
I hated doing this work; I hated lowering myself to bow before these humans.
This was beneath me.
“Once you’re done, I have some refreshments set up at the table. You can enjoy them with your friend.” The lady smiled, walking towards her room—it was her study hour, a time when she read old war stories.
And she was… nice.
It was strange.
Humans have always been selfish and evil creatures.
Lying and cheating others just to survive.
But maybe, even among the trash, there were a few good ones.
And if Lord Azazel wanted me to work for this human, then I would.
“It’s just a spot,” Kalawarner sighed. “Leave it. One spot isn’t worth wasting all that energy for.”
She didn’t understand.
It wasn’t about one spot but my inability to set things the way I wanted them to be.
“It will be gone,” I said firmly. “I just need to wipe it harder.”
It was a stain, and all stains can be removed. All that was needed was the right amount of effort.
“Hard work is not always rewarded, Raynare,” Kalawarner sighed. “Sometimes, you end up putting in too much effort for too little reward or no reward at all.”
Having this stain removed from this damned floor would be more than enough.
And maybe, if I work hard enough…
Lord Azazel will take me back and keep me under his wing.
However…
“All the hard work you did,” Kalawarner sighed, “it was all for nothing.”
It made my hands stop for a moment.
“You did it all for him, hoping it would please him, hoping that you would be rewarded.” She looked at me with an emotion I hated—pity. “Instead, you were punished and thrown out.”
“Careful…” My voice was coarse, but I knew I couldn’t reveal my powers.
Not here, not when Reo’s mother was close by.
“You know I’m right.” However, Kalawarner ignored my warning.
“From a respected Fallen with dozens under you to working under humans and cleaning their houses.” She sighed, taking strides towards the kitchen. “Maybe it’s high time you re-evaluate your choices and plans, Raynare.”
As I rubbed harder, the stain did slide off.
But it didn’t come off; instead, it moved to another spot—being dragged there against the force of the cloth—dirtying the place further.
Dammit.
What am I doing wrong?
…
…
[Evening — Occult Research Club]
“How was your first day?” Akeno asked, curiously pouring me some tea.
“Tiring…” My head was pressed back on the couch, my body limp and my mind exhausted. “The sheer amount of material I had to read through on the first day was beyond just tiring.”
She seemed to sympathize. “I can only imagine how tough it must be working under the Governor General of the Fallens.”
It felt nice that she was worried about me, but she should also be focusing on herself.
“Why haven’t you asked Asia to look at your wounds?” She had been training with her team, fighting and improving herself for the fight against Riser.
“When we face Riser, we won’t have the luxury to always fall back and have our injuries healed,” she raised a good point. “So, consider this as training for that.”
That was one way to look at it.
And well, they were training quite hard. Officially taking a break from classes and training the entire day until night.
They must be stronger than before, right?
{Threat: Low-Low Level}
Or not?
Does it mean that I have been growing stronger too fast, or is their progress too slow?
What about her class?
{Name: Akeno Himejima}
{Class: Middle-Class Devil}
{Threat Level: Low-Low}
{Type: Devil / Half-Fallen Angel}
But as soon as I stared at her entire profile, my eyes shot open.
No.
It wasn’t the class or the threat level.
But something else.
I never checked her status, did I?
After meeting her and Rias, I didn’t check their status; instead, I was busy figuring out the situation. And after that, since they told me their class, I never bothered checking.
And not once had I checked Akeno’s status after getting the Advanced Form of Sixth Sense.
The one that can show all Types—even the hidden ones, like Akeno’s.
Yeah, I’m talking about her other type.
Half-Fallen Angel.

[[A/N: The Type does not show Human for reincarnated devils as they are no longer humans. It will however be shown for hybrid children like Vali and Akeno.
P.S. Major flood in my area, it even entered the houses of many people (thankfully not mine). And it also damaged the electrical supply, so been without electricity for a while.
Came back yesterday night, so wrote a chapter and did all other work.
Will write 2 chaps tomorrow.
