I was in 8th grade in the US when this came out, and it definitely popularized the books again. Many of us had already read The Hobbit before this movie trilogy was announced, and we were eager to read the LotR trilogy to see the differences from the film.

There are hours and hours of footage showing how they went about making the movies, crafting the world, the music, costumes, armor/weapons, etc. You can find a lot of it on YouTube if you don't have physical copies of the movies with the special features. One of my favorites is the "Bigatures" featurette which talks about how they made and shot all of the amazing sets and architecture you see on screen. While there is CGI, most of it is tangible models that can be shot on film. The level of detail is insane. I think that's why these movies don't feel dated the way CGI-heavy movies from the same time can sometimes feel dated.
