Here you can ask me things you're wondering about for our games or company and they'll be answered at the end of the month an an audio recording (with a text transcript too). Just make sure the questions long follow the guidelines!
The thread will close after the 19th.
Guidelines:
1. Please don't reply to other people's questions even if you know the answer. The fun of joining a Q&A is that the developer can give a direct response to you and that everyone else also gets to hear/see the answer in the end of the month post. Having another player resolve the question in the comments right here might not be what the asker was hoping for. This thread is more about having a good time rather than looking for an immediate response to an important question. And if you do have a question you want to hear about right away, it's best to ask in some other thread or to message me directly.
2. I'm afraid questions about what scenes/choices/art assets Our Life: Now & Forever will include aren't answerable right now. Most of the details are decided as the game is created and currently I'm only writing Step 1. I do know some things coming later, but only a small fraction of the whole game.
3. The questions can't be about more serious/potentially upsetting topics because I don't want those listening to suddenly be surprised with something they might not have been prepared for/want to be confronted with.
4. Please keep the questions here to things that wouldn't be really hard to tackle in an off-the-cuff, spoken out loud kind of Q&A, aha. Questions about a half dozen characters or wanting an entire theoretical situation described aren't super doable in this situation.
You can always send me questions outside of the audio Q&A if they wouldn't work here!

For OL2 Step 4, do you have an estimate of how long it'll take to release after the base game completes? No rush, I'm just curious. And on that note, will the save of our previous playthroughs of the base game still work or do we have to start another playthrough to be able to play Step 4? 2. Not sure if this has been asked, but I think it was cute how if you choose the 'crush' option in OL1, the adults notice and mentions it later and I'm wondering if that'll be the case for OL2 as well. 3. For the final question, what kind of book genre would the OL2 characters enjoy? Thanks so much for y'all's hard work as always! Take care <3

I hope you are all doing well, and thank you for taking the time to answer our questions! 1) Since the more ‘middle ground’ dynamic settings are meant to act as a sort of neutral option than the more extreme settings like doting, praising or deferring, will those settings have unique dialogue options or reactions from the LIs the way the more extreme settings do? Or will it be more like ‘this is the base type of response, and there can be alterations to how it’s worded or communicated if you have a dynamic that’s more on one end’? I hope that’s not confusing, I tried to phrase it the best way I could haha 2)Obviously neither of the LIs are very good at lying in step 1 because they’re little kids, but how are they at it in step 2? 3)For step 3, are the leads/MC going to be in high school still or newly graduated?

Is this a "meta" style choice where it affects whether the other character is actually aware of their crush or not, or is it just whether the mc thinks they do? Sorry, bit of a wordy question I'm not great at descriptions

I was reading his step 4 a few days ago for the first time and he mentions not seeing his childhood friends since leaving for college and that got me curious about it. Do you have any fun head canons about the OL1 characters? Something random that you think would be a fun addition to the characters. 2. Do you think that MC and Liz have a fun sibling handshake? I also have a few more questions that David may not be able to answer (if you'd like please answer anyways! It's always fun learning your opinions, David!!) 1. If your MC marries Cove, does Derek, by the time of the wedding "get over" his crush on MC or is it always going to be a bit awkward? 2. What's one pet peeve that the OL1 boys have? Not sure if this has been answered before but, since Step 2 is right around the corner, how do you think things like envy/jealousy or initiative level will be handled when the relationship is changed mid-step? Those decisions are made at the beginning of the step so will the game just make some assumptions or will there be some kind of prompt to decide?

For my OL2-related question, I know they aren't part of the game but what are Tamarack's maternal grandparents like and they're relationship with Nichole, Frederick and Tamarack if any? That aside, thanks for all your hard work! I'm looking forward to Step 2 and finally seeing Serenity and Vianca, as well as the Baumanns Younger, make their appearances in the game! Serenity and I will be having Black Kid Solidarity hehehe Oh I guess there's one more OL2-related question for me, I know from what we have so in the Step 2 Prologue that we can set how often we've met with Tamarack's parents and if we do or don't like them, but will there be anything about how they feel about us the player? Like if they feel we're a good or bad influence on Tamarack or if they view any crushes had as puppy love not worth taking seriously etc? As for Project W, I was wondering what made you decide to have the game be Spring-themed over Winter? I'm interested in the thought process that went into the decision! I'm looking forward to playing it once it's finally available or even as a beta tester!

And this leads to the broader question; roughly, how much wiggle room is there for us to "fill in the gaps" when it comes to MC's and Opal's backgrounds? For example, if Opal doesn't explicitly have a degree, could the player decide that she got, say, a master's degree, or no degree at all? To clarify, I am simply referring to the player having wiggle room to headcanon, and not that these are things that can be chosen by the player in the game itself. Not that he has to of course, but does Cove ever come out to Cliff/Kyra like he does with MC? 2. Does Baxter gel or spike his hair that way in Step 3 and 4? With how its more of a natural wave in N&F Step 1, 2, and 4, I was wondering if he purposefully styled it differently at those ages! 3. Cove’s baby picture was sooo adorable, would Derek and Baxter have similarly embarrassed reactions to MC seeing theirs? Qiu and Tammy as well?

From a furniture/design perspective, how different would their "dream bedroom" be from the bedroom they actually have? If the LIs could have any pet(s), what animals would they want to have? How do their parents/caregivers feel about pets? Asking about step 1 and potentially step 2 Do step 1 Qiu and Tam do their own hair or do they get help? To what extent do they pick their own outfits? What is the LIs, Ren's, and any of the other step 2 peers' (if you have an answer) favorite subjects in school in step 2? Are there any specific subjects that interest Qiu or is it just a blanket dislike for all haha What kinds of food do Tam and Qiu bring for school lunch in step 1? What do you imagine Qiu and Ren's dynamic settings would be for each other in step 1? Would Qiu or Tam ever dye their hair? If so, what color would they pick? How do the LIs feel about each other's favorite drinks (ie how does Qiu feel about tea and Tam feel about hot chocolate)? Do you have an idea of how their favorites will change as they get older? Also, does Ren have a favorite drink? If Qiu and Tam could be any mythical creature, which would they pick? Kinda like Cove and merpeople. Do either of them believe in any in step 1? I'm curious what Baxter's was? Assuming it had something to do with the summer fling-turned-boyfriend, but I could be wrong. Also, did you have a similar initial inspiration for Tam and Qiu, or was that more just based on designing them as foils?

Since Vianca is okay with people who partially consider themselves to be a girl, but not with boys (during Step 2) how will she react to an MC that is genderfluid and switches between being a girl and a boy? What will she do if she meets the MC while identify as a boy, but in a later event switch to identify as a girl?

That is, mermaids from the darkest parts of the ocean, where the sun's light can never reach. Colossal beings, with hair that's more a mass of stinging jellyfish tentacles, giant jet-black eyes to absorb what little light there is in the abyss, monstrous jaws like those of an angler fish, bioluminescent patterns to light their way, that sort of thing.

Please bear with me if I make any blunders 🥴 I humbly submit my first questions for your consideration: 1. Why is Shiloh one of my favourites? I know you can’t answer that, no one can (except perhaps a professional). I just want to examine him under a microscope!🔬 You mentioned in the past that he would keep his distance from people who are too perceptive, but as he’s such an enigma I could see that being a bit of a challenge; he won’t always be the smartest person in the room, after all. What if a hypothetical friend or girlfriend, who I imagine he’d have sunk a lot of time and energy into manipulating, was onto each and every trick the entire time? What would he do if he had been out-Shiloh’d for years, kept around like a beloved bug in a terrarium? Would he skedaddle and start again to preserve some semblance of control? It also cracks me up to imagine him later in life with a partner, who’s like “yes dear, your deception knows no bounds and I never knew the real you, now let’s take our zimmer frames to the park and visit the grandchildren, they miss you” 😂 2. I’m curious to know how Shiloh would act in situations where there is no recognition or reward (if a Shiloh falls in a forest but no one’s there to hear him, does he make a sound?). Does he put trolley carts back if no one’s around? When he thinks he’s alone, is there anything he might do that would be surprising to those that “know” him? 3. I very much enjoyed the wholesome vibes of OL1, and I’m really looking forward to delighting in some more nostalgic sweetness in OL2. I’m excited for this next instalment especially because I get the impression that there’ll be some more tension and conflict between characters as they grow, with more of a focus on the MC and their problems. I’m excited to witness a new roster of characters experience more extended interpersonal conflict and figure out how to repair frayed bonds and heal wounds - I’m a sucker for that delicious slice of life drama hehe 👹 so wanted to ask if you plan to include more of the above? 4. The relationship meter mechanic is pure genius! In OL1 the relationships are quite straightforward, and I wondered if you plan to take a slightly different approach with regard to how they evolve in OL2; I completely understand that something like an unrequited love route would be too complex of an addition to include, nevertheless I feel like this story is ripe for a “they fell first, but they fell harder” dynamic, or a right person wrong time situation at some point, with both the LIs, but especially Qiu. Am I being too greedy (probably)? Will there be some flavour or indication of that sort of thing? Thank you so much for your time! 💛

Akin to how MC can be perceived to look a lot or not at all like Opal, do Ren, Tamarack, or Qiu get perceived as looking particularly like one of their parents (or grandparents lol) over the other, or maybe a good mix instead? 2. I'm not entirely sure how to phrase this, but compared to like a year or two ago, do you feel like the rhythym or flow at which you write OL2 has changed? Have you hit more or less writing blocks? Do you feel more comfortable in terms of direction?

I don't know if I'm reading too much into it or remembering wrong, but I noticed that sometimes when my MC hugs him he's slow to respond or maybe even a little awkward about it. I do vaguely remember a scene where the MC gets a hug from Autumn and acknowledges that it's rare for him to initiate that kinda stuff. Also my MC is always either his friend or crush if that affects the reason!

My question is: "Are we going have another "us" Moment like Home. Because I redo the playthrough of working my character way up to become friends with cast. But I wanted to know if we kept the feeling of "we dont belong here. I want to go back to my original home." Is there like another personal chapter because im not going to lie it was 10/10 writing i kinda want to see more of that, but bounding with qiu and tam over our issues. If that makes sense."

We know Qiu has a difficult time even going to school in step 2. Would you say an academic MC would help them get through classes (like study sessions or tutoring them or giving them your notes), esp for classes they especially aren't paying attention in? Even if it's not in the game, is that help something they would accept? 2. Will we be finding out more about Tamaracks mysterious parents or will they always be kinda a mystery? 3. Will there be any more or additional MC customization options in step 3? (Im so so so excited for step 3 content LOL) 4. Will there be content similar to OL1 where you get to decide how you feel about your body/appearance in step 2 to get a grasp of MC's mental state? On a similar note, will we get to go more in depth about choosing our interests similar to how we did with telling Kyra in OL1? Thank you so much for such amazing games! Feel free to skip any that are too spoiler-y or that you aren't able to answer. 1. What if MC, upon finding out Qiu finds terms like 'partner' or 'significant other' too formal, jokingly keeps calling them increasingly elaborate titles for it? Like 'my dearly esteemed compatriot in romantic endeavours' or something like that. 2. Since you said theh don't really read/speak Chinese much and were raised in Oregon and all, does Qiu pronounces their name with correct intonation and everything every time, or do or do they simplify it to be more casual/Americanize it a bit? Whenever I have to say my foreign name in front of friends, I always end up saying it with an American accent, haha. 3. We know that's she's a cis woman, but are there any terms of endearment that Tamarack especially enjoys being called by? Being reminded that she's pretty, something really corny, something less corny, etc etc. especially since i imagine with her being more self-conscious in step 2, being very openly cringe or PDA-y (even jokingly) could be embarrassing for her. Compliments or petnames work! 3.5. Speaking of which, how do both leads feel about petnames in general? We can give them a nickname in Step 2, but how about particulars on what sort of thing they prefer, if they aren't really into it, or how close you'd have to be (ex. an MC who casually/platonically called their friends 'hun' or 'dear' vs someone being explicitly romantic)? Do they use any? Sorry if this is a bit vague, but I think any details could be fun. 4. How did/do the OL love interests realise they have a crush on MC? Since you've said both Qiu and Tamarack have never had feelings for an actual person like that before, I imagine it could be a bit of a shock/a lot to process, or potentially take a while to realise. Either step is fine! 5. Are the jealousy reactions different between relationship standings? For example, would Tamarack with a crush on MC react differently to MC being affectionate with someone else compared to Tamarack who saw them as a best friend. 6. Would there be any way for characters to be both envious of and jealous over another character? For example, if Tamarack or Qiu envied how easily MC effortlessly to have a handle on their life (academically or socially) in Step 2, while also not wanting them to continue paying attention to them due to MC being someone they hold closely. Something something, to deeply envy someone, you also have to admire them deeply. A love-hate sort of sense. 6.5 Along the same lines again, do they struggle with or recognise said feelings of jealousy and/or envy? How would they feel once they realised they felt that way? Do they feel as if they shouldn't feel that way about MC/that they're a worse friend for it? Is it an insecurity? Would they ever talk about it openly/admit to it (at least to MC)? If not in Step 2, then maybe when they're older. 6.5.1. What would even cause said feelings of jealousy to sprout? At least in Step 2. 7. How would Step 2 Qiu feel about getting into a sort of 'self-care pact' with an MC they were close with? Something like deals to take care of themselves, eat well, or not say self-deprecating things about themselves so the other does the same. Keeping each other accountable while also holding each other up to be better. 8. In lieu of my friends doing the same, how would Qiu/Tamarack react if MC told them the nickname their friends called them was something mean? Would they question it at all? Would they tell MC it was mean? 9. I promise the end of the question barrage is near. In honor of Pride Month, how would the OL leads (+ maybe Baxter/Ren) feel about an MC jokingly making jokes along the lines of 'ohh it's those darn gays' , 'can't stand these homos' , or homophobic dog meme type stuff while being LGBTQ+ themself? Or like a trans MC playfully nudging Ren and going 'as a cisgender i absolutely can not believe the agenda being forced upon these kids' or something in a stupid voice. Would they play along? Call them out? Be uncomfortable by it? + some silly one off questions! Would we ever be able to edit the previous choice display screen to use stickers instead of icons? How would Qiu and Tamarack be in a roleswap AU? Like if Tamarack had been the Golden Grove local and Qiu had just moved there with you instead. Would they act any differently/have a different dynamic? What did Qiu underline in the prologue when he was writing everyone's favourite colors? And finally, how would Baxter react to his birthday word cloud considering some silly stuff like rizz and such are there?
