Project W Post: September 2024

Happy Project W Wednesday! And it is actually on Wednesday again.

Last month, I discussed how the game is becoming more of a real story rather than purely ideas. September has reminded me how far I still need to go, though in a good way. I know enough about what I'm doing to start picking out points that are weak. I've been condensing/simplifying some things and making other aspects less basic/straightforward.

A funny example is that I realized I had a bunch of single characters in similar but technically different groups/careers. In real life, of course there are a lot of similar but not exactly the same work options. However, in a story, it was gonna be way too many things that'd need to be named and remembered and distinguished from each other. It's gone from over a dozen to around eight. That's still a lot, but Project W has a particular naming convention for stuff. The fantasy elements don't use typical names like "mage" or "warrior", and there's not too many major characters who have standard, real life careers either. Almost everything is unique to Project W.

Another thing I did this month was that there was a major side character and subplot I'd had as an element for almost a year that I cut entirely! Removing that character and the group they were associated with from the story was definitely needed in hindsight. It was an incorrect fit, but it had been an early idea and a pillar a lot of things were built around. I'm pleased with myself that I could see past the parts I liked and take out future problems by the roots. It makes me feel a bit more confident that perhaps I can pull this more ambitious project project off.

The three leading characters have continued to develop as well. There's one who is particularly formed in my mind- this character even has a name! That's an amazing step. The other two leads have a lot going for them too. One went through some big changes lately and got new qualities this month. I think I'm at a point where I'll mainly be adding more and more to what they have rather than removing and replacing parts of them. I think people are gonna like them 😁

And that's everything for this month's Project W ramble!

This somehow made me adore Tamarack even more than I already do. Didn't think that was possible. I look forward to seeing the completed CG!

Then I wish you the best of luck in figuring things out. The inspiration process is tough, no worries!

I understand that there's not a lot for other people to say about it right now. Originally, I had a much more thought out plan with named characters and everything, but not long after deciding to do these posts I realized I needed to scrap the plot/cast and just keep the general world/vibe. So right now, my updates are really just a look at how I'm trying to piece something together. It's a little insight into the earliest type of development and there's not a good way to accept feedback on something that can still change drastically between months. It's gonna be a while before I can start confidently identifying characters and specific story points, unfortunately. It's not 'cause I'm keeping it a secret, it's cause it doesn't exist, aha.

It all sounds very exciting! :)

I’m so excited to see what happens next with Project W!! I love fantasy stories and the way you talk about the process of developing these new characters makes me so excited to meet them!!!!

Honestly I'm always chomping at the bit to see the next Project W post hoping we'll finally find out what it is. And then it sucks that I can't say anything constructive at all. Just know that I'm cheering on this project from the shadows and I'm sure it'll be just as great as all your games!

Bunni89

I hope it's ok to say, but it's a bit hard to comment on so little info? When you say you removed a character I have no clue whether that's good or bad. All I can say is I vaguely like the idea of playing as a fantasy race in a new world, but when we dunno what race or world it is it's hard to give feedback. Maybe even if you're not willing to reveal details yet you could give things placeholder nicknames? Like "protagonist A" or "the red one", idk. It might be easier to follow?

I love reading about project w, i already love the game even with this little info

I came here after trying the free demo on steam and didn’t came with expectations but ended up really hyped up, I’m willing to see how this story develops, thank you for your hard work

Juno

Oh okay cool! Thanks for clearing things up

Mr. Nacho

OL2 is the only game in development! Project W doesn't have a team working on it. As the person who needs to create future projects, I'm simply imagining the characters and story and choice system. It's going to be a very long time before it actually starts coming into existence. But it's fun to chat about my thoughts with players.

Don't worry, Our life 2 is still being worked on. This is just some planning for the game that is going to come out after OL2.

Hearing you ramble about this project is becoming a thing to look forward too on Wednesday!! Cannot wait to hear and see more :)

Mr. Nacho

I believe they’re working on multiple projects :)

Ashllewelyn

Is Our Life 2 not being worked on anymore..?
