About Adventure Mode
Added 2017-10-01 11:30:02 +0000 UTCIf you haven’t already noticed, at the end of each month we take a good hard look at ourselves. Looking over the things we’ve done, the problems we have encountered and anything that sticks out. Being as honest with ourselves as possible and with our Patrons.
Based on what we know, the thing that is sticking out to us lately, is the Adventure mode.
It's going to be a long one. So for convenience, we added a summary towards the bottom. But please read the whole thing if you can.
"What about Adventure Mode?"
Adventure Mode is something we really want to do, and it is part of a bigger plan we’re working towards since starting our Patreon page.
Unfortunately though, there are some realities we must take into account that prevent it from growing with the rest of the Project the way we’d like it to.
The real heart of the problem for Adventure mode is time. We just don’t have the time to really focus on it, not without it impacting other parts of development.
After looking over the past few months, focusing on the Adventure Mode features really put a dent in our ability to do public releases which if continued, would've made it difficult to move forward and not have a pleasant outlook for Paizuri University.
It is also getting in the way of letting us facilitate the ability to create it. Such as growing our Patreon to the point of getting someone new on board to help with the modelling process and pay them appropriately to do so.
Last month, we went back to something familiar taking away our focus on Adventure Mode. Prioritising the things we already know how to do, and in doing so we managed to hit our internal goals consistently.
We also found that some of the things that previously took a long time, like background art, don’t take as long as they used to.
Based on all that, we decided to make some changes to adventure mode.
"So what’s the plan with Adventure mode?"
We’re not getting rid of it, but we are going to change it. Instead of first person 3D roaming, we’ll be changing it to more of a point and click style visual novel game.
I know that’s something we didn’t want to do, but in hindsight, Paizuri University is seen as a visual novel, so we might as well keep it that way for Paizuri University.
This pushes it into the realms of do-able with the time we are able to put into it every month, and also lets us develop the additional features which are part of the overall vision for Paizuri University.
It does put a limit on what we can do with the quests, making them simpler, more story focused and less about any gameplay that may have arose from it originally. But we do gain the chance to tell more unique stories and take advantage of the things we know how to do well and even improve them.
It also means our focus is where it matters. And that is more H-Scenes.
The hope here is to keep pushing forward and be better prepared for when we do try doing a First Person adventure game again, which is likely to be on a new project and not in Paizuri University.
Summary
So to be clear and summarise, if it was too long and you didn’t read it (TLDR). Here’s what the changes will do.
Pros
- Utilizes the time we have better.
- Let’s us develop the additional features needed for the overall vision we have.
- More story and H-Scenes that can be done as part of the regular flow of development.
- Less likely to be Gimmicky Gameplay in Quests
- Less likely to be delays for releases due to game breaking bugs or complications with new and big systems.
- We can focus on improving the quality of each release.
- Regular Public releases.
- Paizuri University can keep going.
Pro/Con
- It’s a Visual Novel.
Cons
- Simpler and less unique gameplay.
And that’s it!
What do you think? Let us know.
These changes won’t be immediate, but more of a transition while we develop Chapter 3. So expect random updates about it’s progress in the change logs and news posts over the coming months.
We hope y’all understand our decision.
It’s hard to say if this is sad or exciting…. but it is definitely kind of me’h exciting.
If you have any questions or comments, feel free to get in contact with us via DM or by leaving a comment. To all patrons, if this decision impacts your reason for supporting us, we completely understand.
We hope y’all enjoy Paizuri University and looking forward to the new plans for Adventure Mode!
