[Development] Memento Progress #6~!!!

Hey y’all,

I’ve been talking with the team, trying to write this post all month, and figuring out what we should and shouldn’t talk about yet.

There’s lots of stuff in the works we’re super excited to tell you about, but a lot of it is either too early or too risky to show yet.

So after much discussion, we’ve narrowed it down to a few concrete things we can talk about. Not everything is 100% final, but it should help give y’all an idea of where we’re trying to go.

Now prepare yourself for a little sneak peek at what’s been going on behind the scenes!

The Prototype

It’s Bill’s Apartment in a 3D mock-up! It's part of the roleplaying prototype involving Kareen, that we’ve been piecing together these past few months. 

It's our lewd proving ground for all the roleplaying-like features in the works.

We also have a 3D character design that we’ve been developing too, BUT... there’s still a bit of work to do.

New Logic Graph

Our Z-Script system has been great for writing large sections of dialogue, but they’ve been really annoying to use outside of dialogue scenes or anything with complicated branching.

The logic graph solves that by letting us run blocks of code that control different parts of Memento in a graph. It’s the same powers as Z-Script, just without the messy soup that can happen, to make complex scenes more manageable.

Other Nerdy Stuff

Memento Engine is really really big, with each new change and feature added it was becoming unnerving to work on. 

With so much code, a critical failure in the engine in the middle of production, or even before a release (which happened more times than we’ve ever counted in the Zurizuri Engine), would not be a fun time.

So we’ve adopted testing strategies using Unit Tests for all critical systems, to help ensure code stability and recover some of our coding confidence.

Basically, it means we can make the changes we need, and if something messes up, we’ll know very quickly what to fix and where to fix it.

Our resource management systems have also been updated to let us Load and Unload on the fly, really quickly and only when needed. This keeps memory usage to a minimum in complex scenes with lots of resources, which is super great for Android devices.

We also have a new NPC AI system. It’s still really early in development, so there’s lots more work to do. But hopefully, by the next dev post, we’ll have something neat to show y’all with it.
