What happens to old spacecraft?

What happens to old spacecraft?. We know when new ones are launched and sometimes when they don't make it to where they are going but after that, they just seem to go quiet.

From the very first man-made object to orbit the earth to the ISS we look at where do they end up.

I haven't seen it for years but rewatching it again now and you really notice how well Carl tells the story and with that link to the updated version he appears 10 years on at the end of some episodes to update on some of the things he mentioned. Great music from Vangelis, Tomita and other unknown electronic artists too :-)

Paul, thanks for the link, I am watching now with my Sunday morning coffee. He has a wonderfully poetic way of talking. On the subject of personalities, my own hero of this time is Margaret Hamilton, who coined the phrase 'Software Engineering' to help explain to NASA that software is a proper engineering discipline, and in doing so defined my own job title. :)

Could be like Contact and we try to find the aliens when they send a message back :-) That was written by Carl Sagen who started out on the Pioneer programs and Voyager and got them to put the gold plaques and records on them.

Great one! But is it going to end like the film Gravity? Or like V'ger, they will come back as sentient living machines without regard for human life? And which is worse for us??
