Talking Simpsons - Bart Gets Famous With Alan Siegel

"I shouldn't let this bother me. I'm in television now. It's my job to be repetitive. My job! My job! Repetitiveness is my job!" - Bart Simpson

A trip to the box factory causes Bart to catch the showbiz bug when he sneaks away and lands a gig behind the scenes at The Krusty the Clown Show. But when a bit part on a sketch makes him an overnight sensation, he learns just how long a single catchphrase can sustain an entertainment career.

Our guest: Alan Siegel, senior staff writer at The Ringer, and author of the upcoming book, Stupid TV, Be More Funny

Honestly, one of my least favorites ever. It just tries too hard on the self-referential/deprecation shit, and you can't get me to skip an episode faster than that smarmy Conan caricature always being the preview image (I'm already going to hell, so I'll say it: I can't stand Conan). BUT - this podcast was great, and Alan's knowledge has impressed me enough that I'll definitely be getting his book when it comes out.

You’re going to love when we have her on for Bart Gets an Elephant

Hey I'll take boring affordable Simpsons figures over ones that are way too expensive.

I'm supremely jealous you guys got to read Alan's book already. I've got my copy pre-ordered and can't wait! As far as the script dates, I'm only aware of the Final 1 draft dated July 9th, 1993 (pulled from the George Meyer script files). It's interesting that Bart calls it "The Conan O'Brien Show"; kind of sounds like they were hedging their bets on the show's name.

Piggybacking on this to recommend David Peisner’s excellent book “Homey Don’t Play That!”

I think "The story of how two brothers...and five other men..." is quietly one of the funniest jokes of this entire season. I think about pretty much every time my boss is giving a boring speech at work.

When you have the chance, please check out the history of In Living Color. The show didn't suffer because Jim Carry left, but rather Keenan Ivory Wayans and Damon Wayans refused to contribute to the show any further due to conflict with the network execs.

Something interesting about this episode I noticed is the layout during the infamous “Say the line Bart” scene. We’ve all seen the POV shot of Bart with everyone looking at him, but earlier in the season in Cape Feare during the “despite Barts objections” scene that shot is also layed out the same but almost like it’s zoomed in a bit for Bart Gets Famous. Some interesting details included are the characters and their positions being the same (Milhouse, Sherri or Terri, and one of the other classmates with one tooth leaning on Martins desk) with their facial expressions changed. In Cape Feare some other interesting details are the same unnamed classmate casually leaning his arm on Martins desk and a female classmate on the left side of the shot with some interesting proportions, who is replaced with Richard in Bart Gets Famous.
