Talk To The Audience?!? - January 2025

The start of 2025 was short on happy headlines, but we have a few nice memories to share after January. First, there's news on the Simpsons' schedule changing, plus we preview some podcast plans, and then we reflect on a month full of RPGs, Squid Games, & David Lynch films. Lastly, we wrap up the usual way by spotlighting some of our favorite Patreon comments, including some talk of DVD bonus features and cat ownership. So dance with your favorite ice cream cone as you listen to our monthly community podcast!

Jonathan Joss, voice of John Redcorn from KOTH also lost his home and one of his dogs in the fires. He has a line of personally made spices you can buy to support him, I also think there’s a GoFundMe

Anna Mansager

More Nina Matsumoto please! Nina's relaxing voice is like ASMR and all three of you guys have great banter.

He insulted the people in Gaza while (I'm assuming) he was insulting non-voters for not voting for Democrats. None of us really knew until we had to look it up on bluesky and now everyone's digging up his dirt.

Plus you probably heard how he based Toothless’ acting on his cat. and had to work though the redesign of toothless’ model. He also met his wife through animation and they are the only married couple to be nominated for annie awards for the same category in the same year! (2006 flushed away)

the animator for Toothless, Gabe Hordos has a great interview where he talks about immigrating to the US from rural Canada, and got his first work in animation though Vancouver/european studios. Lots of direct to video sequels from Dreamworks…He works for Skydance now and creates short films on YouTube

Uh oh! What did Patton Oswalt do on social media to disgrace himself?

I'm stealing this from a YouTube comment I made three years ago, but my favorite memory of Blue Velvet is seeing it at a Portland theater back when PBR ruled the drinking scene here, so when Dennis Hopper yelled "Heineken!? Fuck that shit! Pabst Blue Ribbon!" the entire audience erupted into cheers.

When I saw George Meyer on the Saturday Night Live documentary I knew you guys would mention him! Edit: Just watched Flow and Damn! Thanks for the recommendation! My cats enjoyed watching it too.

Although I can't source my claim I'm pretty sure in some of the extensive twin peaks supplemental material I've consumed i recall hearing that fire walk with me was supposed to be the first of a trilogy, but the films tragic critical and commercial failure the other films got scrapped.

Your 'FWOAR's were well executed, well done 👏 I was also listening to the July Mad Max episode of Retronts, and Bob's efforts to do Australian elocution had heart 🫶 On Lynch: often there is nothing to 'get', much of what he's doing is raw abstract expressionism. Things you might describe as being 'Lynchian' in other forms of media are often given this descriptor because they made no sense while simultaneously giving you feelings of creeping dread. But they typically make more narrative sense than the actual Lynchian concepts they sought to emulate. Some things to keep in mind at all times when watching Lynch: He is obsessed with the concept of doppelgängers, you could line up everything he has ever made and 95% of it would be about or reference the idea of doubles, double lives, look-alikes, people replacing other people etc. His plots are non linear. The beginning of the story is usually the middle, and if you're looking out for it keenly enough, you can often figure out where the story comes to its end and loops back onto the beginning. Lost Highway & Mullholland Drive are perhaps the best examples of this. He was a unique auteur we won't see the likes of again. RIP David 😓

Henry, besides Scarecrow video the big (small) cool movie place you should check out is the beacon cinema. It's kind of exactly as out of the way, which is to say a liiiiitle out of the way if you live in central seattle/ cap hill or the eastside as scarecrow, but worth looking at their scheduel. Fortunately I live in NE seattle so scarecrow is actually very convenient for me. It seems like they're mostly have a month long in memorium for David Lynch rn 😎

We covered The Road to El Dorado and I definitely liked it (on record!), so I'm going to assume I meant "the first good Dreamworks movie of the CGI era." - Bob

Talking Simpsons

When you call How To Train Your Dragon "the first good Dreamworks movie", I think you meant to say "the first good Dreamworks movie in a while". They opened the studio with Prince Of Egypt and Road To El Dorado. Not a bad start! If you don't like Shrek then yeah the next 9 years are kind of a wash.

Quite the coincidence. Like Bob, I decided to revisit The Hobbit book and have been really enjoying it. It's a fairly breezy read and I'd forgotten how much character the narrator has in it. Very much makes you feel like someone is telling you a story rather than simply reading one.

Jonathon

I know but thought you would have mentioned it - no worries though 😀

I believe we covered this when the announcement originally came in September, or during some episode afterwards. - Bob

No mention of the end of tapped out ?🤷‍♂️😎
