He got popped in the face one time and sat his ass down while his little sister was about to be raped and sold/killed. Even if the Vikings were superhuman and way more experienced in battle, how can you not give everything you've got to protect your family? It's true that it probably wouldn't have amounted to much, but you've gotta at least give it your best shot. After the sister died, it's more understandable since he'd already lost everything at that point, so there's no reason to fight anymore.
